Can anyone identify this 'uniform' please?
« on: Wednesday 02 December 15 18:41 GMT (UK) »
This is a picture of my Great Aunt Ina (real name 'Robertina). Her dress/uniform reminds me of the Salvation Army but have no family info to back that up.

Can anyone here suggest/confirm what this uniform might be?  I know in later life she was a nursing matron and ran a care home for the elderly.

I'm making up a montage in a clip-frame of various family members (both mine and Mr Stoney's) and what a mixed bag they are - but this is the only 'Salvationist' amongst them. Her mother and at least one of her siblings were staunch members of the Plymouth Brethren, whether that has any bearing.

This picture has seen better days, (unfortunately I only have a digital copy) so if any of you have five minutes I wonder if you might be able to spruce her up a bit, please? Would really love to include her in my pictorial Family Tree picture!

Many thanks for your time,

Stoney

I would say Salvation Army, by the hat and the neck adornment looks the SA shield.

That's what I thought, too, Jebber - but I don't recall any mention of the SA in the family.  ???

She was one of my maternal Grandfather's siblings.

The large bow and trailing ribbon to the bonnet look very much like SA. The looseness of the top is more unusual, I wondered if she was pregnant, I cannot make out if she is wearing a wedding ring.

If you Google Salvation Army dress 1900 you will find a Jenkins from Pennsylvania in identical costume.
Southern or Southan [Hereford , Monmouthshire & Glos], Jenkins, Meredith and Morgan [Monmouthshire and Glos.], Murrill, Damary, Damry, Ray, Lawrence [all Middx. & London], Nethway from Kenn or Yatton. Also Riley and Lyons in South Africa and Riley from St. Helena.
