I've been in touch with my grandaunt, the last living child of my Edward Winter, and she's confirmed that her father's family was indeed from Portobello Rd!  I'm very pleased

Apparently when Edward's mother died, he had a stepmother he didn't get along with (perhaps this is Annie Arden) and went to school in France.  Then he had the choice of going off and starting a life in South America or Australia and he came here, but I still don't know when.

He did quite well here as a gentleman's outfitter in Sydney, until his business partner diddled him for his half of the business and sent him broke
