what would make you unfit to serve during a war, when you havent been in combat so have no war wounds? im guessing a mental illness or drink/drugs?

If he was in an AA battery around Southampton docks, perhaps he was injured by shrapnel from bomb bursts near his station? Who knows. Hopefully you will get the go-ahead to obtain the war service records and that may give some insight into the reason.

Meanwhile, good luck with your quest!
I am Zoe Northeast, granddaughter of Maximilian Double.

It is with great difficulty I share with you that in the early hours of 07 August 2021, Maximilian passed away unexpectedly but peacefully.

With deep sadness,
Zoe

He also served in the Merchant Navy. Fortunately he was not one of the 30,000 plus members of the MN who died serving their country in WW2.

Can you give me his date and place of birth. He may have Merchant Navy records which would explain the reason for his being at sea.

Thank you for your kind offer seaweed, we have crossed this path once before a few years ago when you very kindly found his records for me and sent me all you had. His records are very thin on the ground and incomplete.
Lawrence dennigan born Edmonton November 1911/12 I can't remember off the top of my head the year! However he gave his DOB as anything from 1910-1913.

Yes sir you did. After I had added the information to my tree I then handed it to his daughter. It doesn't tell us much though.

I have found a wonderful booklet about Bournemouth during WW2 of course it doesn't mention my man or his regiment but it is very insightful and enjoyable to read.

The first thing to do, as with all soldiers, is to apply for a copy of his service records. This will confirm the units he served with. A vast amount of soldiers served with different units through the war, because you have him with 24 LAA Regiment on discharge it doesn't mean he served with them for the duration of his service. His service should list any injuries sustained in service which will tell you why he was discharged.

The reason why there is no 24 LAA Regiment war diary could be due to there only being a Regimental HQ and they relied on the Battery diaries - This is quite common, especially if the batteries are working independently from the parent unit.
