Interesting Marriage Entry
« on: Thursday 10 December 15 18:13 GMT (UK) »
Saw this in a Staffordshire marriage register. Made me wonder at what point the Curate realised something was up  ;)

20 Oct 1810 - Thomas Finney and Sarah Baker marry. Witnesses: John Baker and William Darlaston.

But before that, on 15 Oct 1810, there is a crossed out marriage entry for Thomas Finney and Sarah Baker with Witnesses James Baker and Alice Ridding. Written at the bottom of the register is the reason why the marriage was not allowed.

England:  Archer, Bailey, Bates, Blower, Bosworth, Court, Hicklin, Orton, Palmer, Robbins, Sedgwick, Smith, Stevenson, Stone, Varnam, Wakelin, Walker
Canada:  Archer, Walker, Spencer, Shepherd
Australia:  Taplin
South Africa:  Risley

Oh, boy - don't you just love original parish register entries!  ;D ;D ;D ;D

Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.
Remember - "They'll be found when they want to be found" !!!

While searching a PR on microfilm at the LDS, I found an entry for an illegitimate child's baptism. The minister, or clerk, had written a half page entry, describing how the child was born "out of fornication" and went on to use colourful language to paint a not very nice picture of the mother.
I am Australian, from all the lands I come (my ancestors, at least!)

From a Parish Baptism register, although the date is not known,

- natural child of Mary X
- base born child of Mary X
- illegitimate child of Mary X
- another of Mary X's bastards
The parish priest/clerk was obviously getting a bit fed up.   :)

This one caught my eye the other day - on the same page as the burial one of my ancestors.

"Mary Ann Murry / The child of a strolling woman / Octr 25th 1827 / Infant / R. Shepherd vicar"

The most amusing thing I've found is not from parish registers but from the 1911 census.
The head of house used the disabilities column to mention his wife's bad temper!
