George Symons & Elizabeth Bickford Henly
« on: Friday 18 December 15 14:40 GMT (UK) »
I have the above marrying at Newton Abbott in Q4 1849 by 1851 they were in Collingwood Melbourne, George dying there in 1860 and his wife returning Jan 1861 to Newton Abbott. Can anyone find their emigration date? I think it was a paid passage rather than a Queen Victoria Mystery tour as he set up in business as an auctioneer. Thanks Pete  (X posted on Devon page)

Hi,

Nothing to do with his voyage out but he was there by December 1851.

George Symons was granted a General Auctioneers licence in December 1851 for the Police District of Melbourne.  The names of the sureties were Frederick Cooper and William Ford.

William Perry, George's future auctioneer partner (I assume) was also gazetted as an auctioneer at the same time with the same sureties.

I can give exact gazettal details if you would like them

1859 Sands, Melbourne Directory.
Symons George, (of Symons and Perry), 36 George street, Collingwood.
Symons and Perry. auctioneers, 30, Collins street, west.

Unassisted Immigrants to the Colony of Victoria index commences in 1852, the year the Passengers' Act of 1852 required the recording of all passengers' names.

Bendigo Advertiser 19 Sep 1860
MELBOURNE NEWS
We regret to have to day to record the death of Mr Symons, of the firm of Symons and Perry. Mr Symons was an old colonist, long and favorably known in the commercial circles especially of this city. He had suffered from ill health during a considerable period, but since his return from England to which place he paid a visit some time ago, his strength had been rapidly failing, and he died on Sunday evening.

George has a probate file which has been digitised at the Public Records Office of Victoria. Downloads are often very slow.
