Glen Donald McDonald, Garry?
« on: Monday 21 December 15 14:27 GMT (UK) »
Hi, I wish to find info on a Donald or Glen Donald McDonald whose children left Scotland for Pei Canada in the late 1700s early 1800s. He was from Garry or Caledonia canal.
Children Major John, Donald known as Awgh Young, Hector and Allan and several girls whose names I don't have.
Major John McDonald was a great piper. He married a Margaret McLean . The McLeans had come to the Island around the same time as did many of the McDonalds.
Three children were born before Major came. Donald died on passage at the age of two years.
Thanks,
Rod

Hello Rod,  My name is John MacDonald,  I live in Middletown Rhode Island USA. I descend from Major John McDonald from PEI and the Isle of Barra, born in Blair Atholl( Dalnamein) on the River Garry. His father was Donald married to Christie Duff, Donalds father was Donald married to a Stewart. My DNA shows that I am actually a MacNeil from Barra. approximate crossover was about 1600 it appears. If you receive this and wish to talk please write.  thanks John (*)

Rod,  sounds like he was from Glen Garry which joined the Great Glen at Invergarry, the Caledonian Canal runs the length of the Great Glen, Inverness-shire.  This is a different Garry from that at Dalnamein, Perthshire,  that river runs to the Tay.

Skoosh.

Also Rod,  Major John left Barra in 1790 along with family on the ship Queen of Greenock, originally destined for Cape Breton Island Canada but due to foul weather the captain was requested to head north to the closest land which was PEI and they landed there. Supposedly Cape Breton was home of many McDonald and MacNeil cousins but they settled in Grand River West ,Prince Edward Island. My gr Grandfather was born there and ventured to Boston in the 1850's,
