Hi Michaela

Have you looked on PapersPast for some answers ?

http://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/cgi-bin/paperspast?a=q&q=&e=-------10--1----0--

A request for 7 look ups is a pretty big ask as we can only order 5 files at a time and often have to wait for them to be brought out to be viewed and then they need to be gone through and the appropriate pages photographed.
You may be able to get what you need for some from PapersPast and save the looker upperer some time at archives,

Cheers Janette

Hi Michaela,

Don't often find this sort of thing - a photo of Robert Strathern actually as a prisoner of war in Dulman POW camp (he's the one sitting in the centre of the photo).  Taken about September 1917.

Found it here: https://www.awm.gov.au/collection/P03236.253.  All public domain stuff.  (Hope it is attached!)

Comes with the following annotation (cut down version):
Outdoor portrait of four allied Prisoners of War (POW) at a POW camp at Dulmen, Germany. Soldiers are gathered around a table covered with a tablecloth on which is placed a vase of flowers and four glasses of beer. The three soldiers on the right are holding cigars. Identified from left to right: 2729 Private (Pte) Oscar Keenan, 53rd Battalion, from Bengara, NSW (standing); Pte R. Strathern, 2nd Otago Battalion, New Zealand (sitting); 4512 Pte Percy Arthur Haslam, 54th Battalion, from Newcastle, NSW (standing); and 4151 Pte John Joseph Costello, 54th Battalion, from Sydney, NSW (sitting).  One of a series of over 400 photographs sent by Australian POWs in German camps to Miss M. E. Chomley, Secretary, Prisoners Department, Australian-British Red Cross Society, London. Original album housed in AWM Research Centre at RC00864, Album image number 304.

Cheers,

And here is another one!  This time Robert Strathern is the one standing on the left.

From the same site: https://www.awm.gov.au/collection/P03236.177/

Extract of notation reads: Studio portrait of five Allied Prisoners of War (POW). Identified standing at back on left is R Strathern, 2nd Otago Battalion, New Zealand and on right is J. Atkinson, 17th West Yorkshire Regiment, England. Identified sitting at front, from left to right, is J. Young, Royal Canadian Regiment (RCR), 4512 Private (Pte) Percy Arthur Haslam, 54th Battalion, from Newcastle, NSW and F.A. Burt, 16th Canadian Scottish, Canada.

There are websites that provide more information on Dulmen camp, and that it is likely that Robert was captured at any of the battles of the Somme in 1916.  Potentially Fromelles...

Cheers,

Hi Spades,

I just want to say a MASSIVE thank you for all the pages you have taken images of and scanned to me.  I know that would have taken a bit of time to do but I am so grateful with not living in Wellington to be able to access this information.  It is all interesting reading and will help with further research.

Regards,
Michaela

Hi @ Infobunny,

Not sure why I never saw a notification come through of your posts and has been quite a while since I was last on this website.  I just wanted to say a MASSIVE thank you to you as well for posting up the links and 2 photos of my ancestor, Robert Tyrrell Strathern as I don't have any other photos of him.  Is nice to have his POW statement which Spades e-mailed me the other day but now I can put a name to his words.  He escaped twice (the second time he was so close to a border - approx. 20 km - which I am picking meant freedom).  Yes, like you say this is quite a rare find which I am so grateful for.

Regards,
Michaela

Hi Janette,

Again, sorry for the delay in replying to your message to my post.  I will remember that for the future about how one can only order 5 records at a time.  I think I was just so excited to see if I could find someone to help me with my request.

Regards,
Michaela

Hi minniehaha,

Again, sorry for the delay in replying to your message to my post.  Thanks for the link to the write up of Gordon’s death.
