I don't think the National Archives hold trade directories, however the Guildhall Library has one of the largest collections of historic trade and telephone directories in the United Kingdom.

No, it been closed for over 20 years now

When my Grandparents were there they had a franchise for Ashbrook Cricket/rugby ground. They did the catering during the cricket season whenever there were matches local and international. Apparently Durham played New Zealand, Australia and South Africa here.    They ran the café, canteen and pavilion. My Grandmother used to do all the baking until she got help in.

In the Ward's Directory 1918
14 Briery Vale  Reed J W confectioner

Also in same directories for years 1925, 1933 and 1937 at same address.  All as confectioner.

In alphabetical section 1937 down as 'John W confectioner 14 Briery Vale Road.'

In the same directory 1901 a grocer was at this address J G Stirling.

These directories are at North Shields library.  Newcastle library has some editions of the Ward's directories too.
