Bowness on Solway Parish records - ORMAN, John
« on: Sunday 03 January 16 12:30 GMT (UK) »
Lookup request please. I am looking for the birth/ baptism date and place of John Orman, born about 1826 in Bowness on Solway in Cumberland. His father is James Orman born 1801 in Colchester, Essex and I think his mother is called Elizabeth. I'm not sure when his father James gets married or when he dies, and have no information about Elizabeth. John enlists in the Army by 1848 and travels south to Windsor and Ipswich, where he dies in 1868.
Any help gratefully appreciated. Rosemary O

Thanks Geoff. I had considered whether ORMEROD could be the original spelling especially as Isabella has it too. I was just hoping that there may be an ORMAN somewhere in the Parish records that I hadn't found. His brother Robert is ORMOND.

I think I noticed another ORMEROD baptism around the same time, a different couple.

Regarding your lot the Essex accent would be unknown in Cumberland and the name ORMAN would be unknown (I'd not heard of it till yesterday ;)) so a mis-spelling isn't out of the question. :)

Thanks - you're probably right, I hadn't thought about that. I will put them in the family tree and see how they fit.
I still haven't managed to find the marriage between James Orman b. 1801 Colchester and Elizabeth b. approx. 1806 in Cumberland. I'm assuming it would be in Cumberland seeing as all children are born there - any ideas? He maybe Ormerod too, but the only Ormerods I can find are from Lancashire.

I'm sure Peter is one of mine. Ive found a baptism record for a Peter Ormerod in July 1838, Bowness on Solway. I'm getting quite a group now. I just need to find out when and where Mum and Dad (James Orman and Elizabeth?) got married and Elizabeth's maiden name.
Many thanks for your help.

I don't have access to census images any more, so am just relying on transcription ... I see in 1861 a ?? ORMAN (female 56 Carlisle) - was that Elizabeth?

Transcription from LDS

Also a Henry ORMAN 56 Colchester with wife Sarah - why did this family move up there? Army?

ORMAN (female 56 Carlisle) in 1861 census is married to Adam Orman born in Scotland - not sure if he is a relation, but the female is not Elizabeth.
Henry Orman 56 Colchester, is an uncle of John Orman and a retired School Master who went to Carlisle to become an artificial manure merchant and to join his brother James (John's father).
Many Ormans were in the Army and were fish mongers/merchants.
