Help please - Margaret Shaw, Calgary
« on: Monday 04 January 16 21:08 GMT (UK) »
Hoping this link will post...

http://www.legacy.com/obituaries/calgaryherald/obituary.aspx?n=margaret-shaw&pid=120728074

I am trying to trace a missing link from my Family Tree (Donald Shaw, born Daviot & Dunlichity, Inverness-shire, Scotland).  There was a possibility he may have gone to Canada.  I came across this death notice, and am wondering if Margaret could be part of my tree.  However have no idea how to go about tracing Canadian information.  I notice this notices states Margaret is buried in the same place as her parents.  Is there records of Cemetery Monument Inscriptions, so I could see if the age on her Fathers headstone could tie in with his DOB etc.?  Any advice/help appreciated.  Thanks.

The info I do have on Donald is as follows;  Donald Shaw born 30/12/1869 at Bridgend, Dunlichity, Inverness-shire.  Donald appears on the 1881 Census in Scotland but after that the trail runs cold, I cant find any Death or Marriage Certificates for him at all.  His parents were Donald Shaw, Shoemaker, born 24/7/1824 Boleskine, Dores, died 25/2/1907 West Croachy, Daviot, married to Christian Shaw (nee McGillivray) born 1834 Achnaloddan, Dunmaglass, Dunlichity, died 6/1/1917 Wester Croachy, Aberarder, Daviot.  They were married on 11/1/1855 at Stratherrick Free Church Manse, Scotland.

On the 1921 Canada Census:

607 5th Ave W, Calgary
Donald Shaw, age 50, born Scotland, immigrated 1907, Occupation - Warehouse Att.
Catherine, age 38, born Scotland, immigrated 1911,
Margaret, age 5, born Alberta

This looks like the family you mentioned in Calgary in 1921. Does this work with your dates?

added census reference:  Alberta / Calgary East / Sub-District 21 / City of Calgary (Part)
England:  Archer, Bailey, Bates, Blower, Bosworth, Court, Hicklin, Orton, Palmer, Robbins, Sedgwick, Smith, Stevenson, Stone, Varnam, Wakelin, Walker
Canada:  Archer, Walker, Spencer, Shepherd
Australia:  Taplin
South Africa:  Risley

Its certainly within his age group give or take a couple of years, and with him being born right at the end of the year, it may be?  I always find the Scottish Census can be out by a year or two sometimes, just depending on whether they have just missed the birthday month, or vice versa.  I have searched Scottish & English records with no luck, and am fairly certain he didnt go to Australia or NZ.  So this Canadian link is the nearest clue I have to tracing what happened to him.  Are Canadian records like Scottish ones?  Would his parents names be on a Death Certificate?  Thanks for your help.

Could this possibly be Donald & Wife

Thanks Lisa, that looks like the couple.
I see they have his birth year as 1871, I wonder how accurate that info is, as that makes both what you have found plus the census info from Sami being his birth year as 1871, when he was born 30/12/1869..... Hmmmm I wonder if I'm clutching at straws?  :o

1 or 2 years out is not much - Why not try to contact the cemetery? They have an email address on their website.
