Margaret Hamilton born County Monaghan circa 1862/1863
« on: Saturday 16 January 16 19:58 GMT (UK) »
I am trying to find the baptism of the above
On her marriage certificate of 1891 ( to Robert Sharpe) in Glasgow her parents are shown as Samuel Hamilton and Eliza Smyth
I have found 4 of her siblings
Sarah b 1864 Castleshane
Stewart b 1866 Castleshane
Robert b 1869 GlaslocH
Samuel b 1873
On the 1901(aged 38)  and 1911 ( aged 47) census she has settled in Bushmills
I believe she was originally Church of Ireland although on the census she is shown as Presbyterian
Many thanks

The 1861 marriage was in Clontibret parish. However the first 2 post 1864 births were in Castleshane which is in Monaghan parish.

If Margaret was born in Clontibret in 1862/3 then the bad news is that Clontibret Church of Ireland has no baptism records prior to 1864 (they are presumably lost). However if she was born in Monaghan then the good news is that their records start in 1802. There’s a copy in PRONI in Belfast.

It was quite common for a woman to change to her husband’s denomination following marriage so nothing unusual in finding Margaret was Presbyterian in Bushmills.

You have Birth and Marriage so what will Baptism get you?
Give a man a record and you feed him for a day.
Teach a man to research, and you feed him for a lifetime.

It would be good to prove the year and the place as I have no proof of either despite what the census states and confirm what was on the marriage certificate to be correct

Samuel Hamilton  was the son of John Hamilton  Letterbane, married Eliza Smythe daughter of Robert Smythe  Letterbane, on 25th Nov 1861 in Clontibret Witnesses were: William Groves + William Smythe

Some of the Vestry Books were sold on Ebay recently so goodness knows where they came from, or what other stuff exists 'somewhere'...
