Sarah Russell
« on: Wednesday 20 January 16 21:00 GMT (UK) »
I seek news of Sarah Russell who was born around 1822 in Toppesfield or Ridgewell (she couldn't make up her mind) and who married Joseph Wiffen in 1841.

What exactly are you looking for and what do you have already? I presume you have census details as you mention change of place of birth?

I have deduced her approx date of birth from the censuses but would like a parish record to confirm it and ideally the names of her parents.

Her marriage certificate would give you the name of her father as a starting point.

This family in 1851 gives William's pob as Toppesfield Essex and Mary's as Finchingfield.

William Russell of Toppesfield bach married Mary Stock otp sp at Finchingfield on 10 April 1819. Both made their mark. Witnesses Charles Smith and Lindamire (?) Betts (both witnesses signed)

Added
The same pair of witnesses were witnesses to another marriage on same day
John Turner bach and Mary Sorrell sp botp.

I can't see the two of them witnessing any other marriages around that time.

Both couples were married with consent of parents, but it seemed a lot of marriages performed at this time had "parents" inserted on the consent section, so it may be just the custom of that particular vicar, or he did marry a lot of under 21's

Thank you very much for the replies. Apparently the banns of William Russell and Mary Stock were published in Mar 1819 at Toppesfield, but they were married in Apr 1819 in Finchingfield. Is this unusual?
