Thank you very much for the replies. Apparently the banns of William Russell and Mary Stock were published in Mar 1819 at Toppesfield, but they were married in Apr 1819 in Finchingfield. Is this unusual?

Geoff

I don't think so as banns have to be published in both the bride and groom's parish, so that explains why. Then the actual wedding usually took place in the bride's parish.

Banns are read in the parishes of both the bride and groom, so that everyone knows their intentions. Hence the phrase spoken during the ceremony "If anyone knows of any impediment to the marriage speak now or forever hold your peace"

Sarah Russell married Joseph Wiffen on 15 Oct 1841 at Ridgewell. I  can't find any parish record of this event, or for the birth of their son Samuel who was born on 31 Aug 1853 at Finchingfield. I've looked at St John Finchingfield and St John Cornish Hall End. I've also failed to discover if they had any other offspring. I would be very grateful for any help!

Hello, Jennifer,
Pardon my ignorance but what exactly was the Braintree Union? Sounds rather like a workhouse...
