Help in deciphering where Charles Bray was born?
« on: Saturday 30 January 16 04:05 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

I have located a possible ancestor (Charles Bray) in the 1871 census.  I cannot read the writing of place of birth - England ???.  It appears that his wife Lydia Bray has similar details as I read her place of birth as (do do)below Charles's entry.

If anyone has ideas it would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks Mel

I'd like to look at the full census Mel. Is this the English census?

I've tried a search for Lydia Bray as the name is more unusual, but can't see one with a husband Charles.

Can you give more details of which census and search terms and reference numbers please?

I have only been able to find this census entry on find my past, ancestry must have the entry under a different transcribed name.  The entry is 1871 England Census, Piece Number 742, Folio 75, Page 13.  Registration District Greenwich.

1871 Census familysearch.org has Charles and Lydia both born in England. No more. He born abt. 1841 and she abt 1845.

Free BMD Dec. Qtr. 1870 Charles Bray married Lydia Stacey, Greenwich area. Possibly Lydia is born Saffron Walden area, Essex Free BMD Dec. Qtr 1843. Charles has too many possibles around 1841.

Hi

Noted on their marriage that Lydia is a widow... maiden surname is ABRAHAM.

There is a Lydia ABRAHAM born about 1842 on the 1851 Census with father George and mother Sarah and various siblings. Living in Ramsay Huntingdonshire.

Cheers

Yes I believe the marriage between Charles Bray and Lydia Stacey to be the same couple as found in the 1871 census.  Unfortunately I have not been able to find further censuses for this couple - bit elusive (as has been with the whole extended family, assuming if it is the same Charles Bray as I'm seeking).  I think I will need to get the marriage certificate with hopes the 'father details' can be linked to what I have.

If I had other censuses to go by, the 'place of birth' may be a bit easier to work out.

Thank you for this - any details on Charles Bray father??

My Charles Bray appears to have been born about 1844 to John and Mary Bray (possibly around Maidstone Kent) I have not been able to find a definitely birth date.  The family is has been noted to 'travel' and has been quite difficult to track - this is the best lead I have on Charles so far
