Ashtray and Lighter

Good morning All,

A friend found the above in a car boot sale and we are attempting to find out more about the item  - It is about 12 cms high and the base appears to have fettled from the top of a piston, perhaps from a large engine - The lighter mounted on the base bears an engraved old pattern REME badge.around the rim it is inscribed thus:

W/S 55 Test House - Egypt Tel El Kebir 26 September 1947

In Remember to

Could they have been civilian workers in a REME workshop, Poles?  Germans?

Can you upload a picture?

I tried, Josey . . but keep getting the following error message   "Sorry! There is already an attachment with the same filename as the one you tried to upload. Please rename the file and try again."

I have cleared the attachments and  renamed the file any number of times with no success - the attachment is only 50 kb so it is not too big . . .

When you attach the image...make sure that you only click once to attach...if you double click...it will appear that the image has already been posted and you will get an error message..

Really sorry . .  tried with Safari . . even got a little thumbnail which didn't happen with Firefox but got the same error message . . .  going to leave it for 24 hours and try tomorrow . . . .
