Ah! Thank you , that's useful. Is that from Parish Registers? I haven't really used those very much in my searches. I will check if she maybe  remarried between 1871 and 1881.

My main aim is to find a link between my gt godfather in 1891 and his past.

Thanks again appreciate your expertise.

Looking for Ruth Hughes, ( nee Brereton), wife of Michael Hughes , born Pentraeth 1827 ,  She is in the Pentraeth area until 1851. Married Michael in 1860, then living in Bangor 1861 and 1871. Her mother was originally from Manchester.

Can't find her in 1881 census.

There is  one local death, discounted previously by Alan as the wrong person. I can only find one other death of a Ruth Hughes of the right age in Ulverston in 1874, which I need to track.

Can't find a remarriage in the 1871-1881 period either.

A bit stumped as to where she is otherwise!

Hi,

Still looking but having no success with Ruth. Would there be any reason for her to be in Ulverston - it is quite a distance from Bangor.

However regarding her parents -

Henry (name shown as Brerton)  died age 62 at Quay, Red Wharf, Anglesey on 19 July 1850 and Margaret Brereton age 69 at Ty Uchaf, Pentraeth, Anglesey on 8 Nov 1871. The informant for Margaret's death was Ruth Hughes. So this seems to fit.

Will look again for Ruth but am not hopeful. Do you know when her husband died - have you found him in the censuses and is he shown as a widower?

Hi Alan

Thank you again!

I also note  in 1851,  Ruth and her mother appear at the Quay Inn, with her mother as publican. The name has been mis-transcribed as 'Bruton' instead of Brereton.

Re The Ruth Hughes death in Ulverston, I can see no reason at present why she should be there.

I have had an exciting find though. I had eliminated many William Hughes b1866-67 in Bangor. My 2 main contenders are:

1871  Aforementioned Ruth Hughes and son William aged 5 in Hill Street, Bangor ................couldn't find them in 1881
1881 Ellen Hughes (born Pwllheli c1832) of Vron Lodge Bangor and her son William aged 15 apprentice joiner...................couldn't find them in 1871.

Checking remarriages for Michael Hughes on FreeBMD, I discovered a marriage for Michael Hughes to Ellen Jenkins 9/12/1878 in Bangor.  Checking Ellen Jenkins in 1871, I found she was unmarried and living at Vron Lodge, Bangor with her niece. In 1881 she was still at Vron Lodge as Ellen Hughes, married with a (step) son, William, age 15. By 1891, Ellen was shown as a widow, living alone. There is a Michael Hughes death in Bangor in the first quarter of 1882. Michael (as a married man)  is missing from Census Returns. I am expecting the marriage cert to show him as a mariner??

Ruth could therefore have died, between April 1871 and December 1878.

Of course, I still haven't tied this in to my gt grandfather in 1891, but it is looking more promising and at least I can feel a bit more confident about getting  a birth cert for William Hughes and hopefully find a link across to 1891 onwards. The fact that his grandparents and parents were possibly dead by the time he was 16 and that he was not brought up with siblings, strongly fit the fact that the William Hughes I know from 1891 had no links to his side of the family, after he moved to Blaenau Ffestiniog.

Your help is very encouraging and much appreciated. Cheers!

Hi,

Very interesting development - it looks like you may be on the way to solving this.

Some more details -

Henry Brereton married Margaret Roberts on 14 Feb 1823. At the time he was a widower and both were from Pentraeth.

His first marriage was to Ann Jones on 9 April 1813 also from Pentraeth. It looks like she died shortly into their marriage, on 12 Oct 1814 aged just 24 (named as Ann Jones).

Two possible christenings for Margaret Roberts in Manchester for 1802 on familysearch.org but probably the most likely is with the mother Elizabeth which was the name given to Henry and Margaret's first child.

After some input from a poster on the Ulverston, Lancs Board, I have bitten the bullet and ordered the Ruth Hughes Ulverston Death Cert too. That's my quota of certs for the time being! .

I do feel like some progress has been made these last few days. Whether it's in the right direction remains to be seen! Thanks for your interest, much appreciated and encouraging. I will update you on the outcomes.

The marriage Cert has arrived and it appears I had the wrong Michael Hughes. The actual one was born 1822, father Hugh Hughes.

Marriage 30th October 1860 at the Register Office Bangor.
Michael Hughes, age38, Bachelor, Mariner, of High Street, Bangor, Father Hugh Hughes,Mariner
to
Ruth Brereton, age 34, Spinster, no occupation mentioned, of High Street, Bangor, Father Henry Brereton, Farmer,
Witnesses William Pritchard and Elizabeth Owen

Trying to locate his parents now!
I found a baptism for Michael  Hughes in 1822 Llanbedrgoch, parents Hugh Hughes and mother surname Ellis.
Marriage in Aberdaron  September 1817 for Hugh Hughes and Elizabeth Elis
Elizabeth Hughes with Hugh Hughes, Mariner, born Beaumaris and younger children on census in Bangor 1841-1871.
Ruth Hughes , wife of mariner Michael is living with an Ann Ellis (of Amlwch) in Bangor in 1861 (coincidence or a member of her mother in law's family?)

This is the best match I've found, although my search skills are not the greatest!!
