Henry E Bower & Catherine X married about 1883 London
« on: Monday 08 February 16 23:17 GMT (UK) »
Hello
I am having trouble finding a surname or marriage details for Catherine. From the 1939 register, her birth date is 22/12/1862 in Poplar. As child (Ada) was born in 1885 in Bow, it seems likely that the marriage took place about 1883, probably in the Poplar area. GRO has no record of marriage - records lost. Henry was born c1858 in Sheffield.
Help - any ideas please.

Hello Jackie

I see they had several other children in addition to Ada.  I take it you have not yet obtained one of the children's birth certificates to identify Catherine's maiden name?

Where did Ada's birth come from? The only one in London around that time is

Births Sep 1884

Bower    Ada Jane
Lambeth    1d   433

If as you say the GRO doesn't have a record of the marriage it either means they are lost, or perhaps they didn't actually marry. The only way is to get a birth certificate of one of their children.

Ada is recorded as only 3 in 1891 so I am also confused as to the source of the 1885 birthdate.

She's not the Ada Jane born 1884 as she was the daughter of Henry Spencer Bower    who married in Wareham in Sep 1875.

They don't seem to have registered her as far as I can see, unless her first name wasn't Ada.

Well,
Ada Annie born 3 November 1885 Bow; Henry E Bower's (b 1888) is unobtainable and that is as far as I have got to date.

...or unless her surname was not (yet) Bower.

The son Henry Ernest (mn per later records) shows in the censuses as born c1886-8. There are lots of boys with those given names in Poplar, but no Bower.  Perhaps one of them is his birth under another surname.
