Dating Please - Norah and Jack
« on: Saturday 13 February 16 06:07 GMT (UK) »
Hi All  ;D,
Would someone be kind enough to give a possible date to this photograph please. I'm trying to ascertain if the young women in the photo could possibly be my grandfather's sister Nora born 1900 in Sheffield, UK. I've done a bit of research on the photographic studio that took the photo being Van Ralty Studio's and apparently they had a studio at 57 Fargate, Sheffield so this would tie in nicely. Only thing is my grandfather's sister's name was spelt Nora not Norah.I know people often spelled their names differently in the past but a dating would give me a bit more to go on. Sadly, Nora passed away at 17 years old at Storthes Hall Asylum. I've no idea who Jack could be. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

My first thought was that she looks quite young. The large bow & ringlets indicate 16/17.
A date is a bit more difficult but I would suggest late WW1 up to about 1920.
My only concern is that they both appear in evening wear & look like a courting couple.
16/17 would be considered very young to be dating.
Could he be a relative?
Now I'm going to add to the confusion & say it could be just pre WW1.
Older women also had this style of hair & bow at this time & she appears to be wearing a wrap around dress which was a popular style from about 1910-14.

My thoughts too jim1. If this is the same young women then this photo would have been taken around a year or less before Nora passed away in 1917 at 17 years. The background to Nora's story is that she had a child at around 16 years of age and died aprox. 7 months later in an asylum (confirmed with birth and death certificates). I wonder if Jack was her beau? He may be a relative but I've yet to discover him in my research.

Have you tried to find a birth cert. for the child ?
Edit:
Have just looked at another Van Ralty back which by the lady's dress style is around 1910-14.
On it there are additional addresses which don't appear on yours giving extra weight that it's pre war.
I believe the additional address were still there post war.
