William Matthews Born 1826 Swansea
« on: Sunday 14 February 16 11:43 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

My 2 x G.Grandfather William Matthews was born in Swansea Abt 1826. he married Sarah Smith and from their marriage certificate I know his father is Abraham Matthews. I found William on the 1841 census with Abraham Matthews and Jennet Matthews (nee Richard)and though Abraham and Jennet were both in their sixties I thought they could be his parents but recently I have found another Abraham Matthews who could actually be his father. So Abraham and Jennet are his Grandparents. The reason for the doubt is that 3 of William and Sarah's children were born between 1861-1865 in Sirhowy. The new Abraham lives in Sirhowy but was from Swansea. Abraham wife in Sirhowy is much younger that him so is not William's mother but their children's names are names which also appear often in the generations. Unfortunately I can't seem to find a marriage for Abaham and Martha or births for their children Margaret (1861), Martha (1863), Isaac (1867) and Jacob (1870). I know the Abraham dies between 1871 and 1881 but the only death I can find is in Crickhowell. If you lived in Sirhowy could your death be registered in Crickhowell? Does anyone have any suggestions how I can confirm or otherwise my theory that this is Williams father?

Regards

Welshrow :)

Sirhowy is/was in Monmouthshire, and births/marriages/deaths would be registered in the Bedwellty Registration District.

Scrub that!

Dukestown, which is next to Sirhowy, was in Bedwellty only from 1934!
Before that it was in Crickhowell Registration District (from 1894).
And before that, as Llangynidr, it was in Crickhowell from 1837.

I can't find any sign of the Abraham, born 1803 Swansea, before the 1871 census! Have you found him at all?
