Harrold Mills/Millers
« on: Sunday 14 February 16 18:34 GMT (UK) »
Dear helpful people,
Does anyone here know whether it is possible to find out what the names would be of millers/miller's assistants, employed in Harrold, Bedfordshire, between about 1780 and 1830? There is something I would like to follow up on.
Would there be a forum for that, could I email some archive, would I need to go somewhere? Or is there nothing of the sort kept for posterity?
Thanks for any help  :)
Lexi

National Defence List 1803, Transport teams, Millers and Bakers

Only one miller listed in Harrold, Samuel Bonfield "will grind 20 sacks a week provided there isn't a scarcity of water".

The 1803 Muster List for Harrold gives Samuel's age as 47, and there's also a John Bonfield age 20 listed as a miller. I suppose that other inhabitants listed as labourers could have worked in the mill, but impossible to tell.

Per Bedfordshire Muster Lists 1539-1831; Editor Nigel Lutt,  Bedfordshire Historical Record Society Vol 71 1992

On another of your posts you say you have the Harrold PRs on CD from Beds FHS...
....using the index of occupations you can find the names of any millers (up to 1812) ....
Job Neal 1755, John Craddock 1791, William Risely 1687, Thomas Layton 1699, John Mountague 1753, John Bonfield 1786.

In neighbouring Carlton there's marriage of John Phelps/Felts of Harrold in 1774.

You may find other references to millers of Harrold in the other PR volumes.

Hadn't thought of that, thanks John!

At least I know John Craddock was a miller in 1791, but I was wondering whether he was one again on his return in about 1817.

While John Craddock was a miller at his marriage in 1791 in Harrold...... it doesn't automatically mean he was a miller at Harrold.

That is a very good point! He was a miller at his marriage in Harrold in 1791, could have been in his home county Northamptonshire, not Harrold, you are right. He was still in the milling business at his second marriage in 1801 (in Northamptonshire), he is then a miller's assistant.
John returns to Harrold in 1817-18 and I was hoping he may have gone there to help rebuild the mill that burnt down in 1805 and seems to be back in business in 1824 (I read up on Harrold on that website link I found in a previous post).
