Harry Welch - Born 10 Dec 1851 in England
« on: Tuesday 16 February 16 03:26 GMT (UK) »
Harry Welch was my 2nd great-grandfather. He arrived in Canada from England around 1867-1870; married Louisa Day in Montreal, Quebec, Canada in 1878 and was living in Saskatchewan Canada in 1911 and 1916. Profession was contractor / engineer. It is possible he was with the English army stationed in Quebec.

I am looking for any information that could help me determine where in England he was born - I do not have any location information. UK 1861 census has a number of Harry or Henry Welch of the right age.

Thanks in advance,
Linda from Canada

FreeBMD (.org.uk) also shows a few possibilities ::)

If his birthdate is correct, then the birth may have been registered in the March quarter of 1852.
Also Harry is another name for Henry. So . . . .

December qtr 1851
Croydon Registration District    vol 4, page 134
Welch, Henry

Ampthill district     vol 6, page 6
Welch, Henry

Wokingham district     vol 6, page 315
Welch, Henry Davies

March qtr 1852
Ormskirk district     vol 8b, page 519
Welch, Henry

By the way - he would have been with the British Army, not the English Army! ;D

. UK 1861 census has a number of Harry or Henry Welch of the right age.

Can you narrow it down by seeing which of these are still in England in 1871 and thus can be ruled out?

Does his marriage cert give any info about parents? (Sorry I am not familiar with Canadian certs)
Edmonds/Edmunds - mainly Sussex
DeBoo - London
Green - Suffolk
Parker - Sussex
Kemp - Essex
Farrington - Essex
Boniface - West Sussex

The age of Harry Welch varies a little. The 1911 Census for 445 4th Ave N Saskatoon Saskatchewan give Harry Welch born December 1855  ???

Not what you asked for - noticed on ancestry tree that someone has Harry passed away Peterborough ( no source/date given)

Perhaps that is not correct - there is a possible death record which is worth a look at in Victoria British Columbia for a Harry Welch aged 66 years, contractor, who lived in Saskatoon and passed away (organic heart disease) 10 June 1918 at St Joseph's Hospital. Buried at Ross Bay 20 June 1918.

I see that the 1878 marriage witnesses were 2 x Welch and 1 x Day.

The Welch witness signatures are hard to read: N.(?) Welch and Annie/Amie? Welch.

The other witness was Mary M. Day.

Harry was a "laborer" at the date of marriage (4 November 1878).

I had a look at some of these for (tentative) elimination, etc, purposes.

The Croydon-registered one appears to have been born in Mitcham, Surrey, and is traceable in English records in adult life.

The Ampthill one was born 21.11.1851 and baptised 05.03.1852 Ampthill, parents George & Sarah, per Familysearch.  He appears to have stayed in Ampthill all his life - poss death there in 1922.

The Ormskirk one may have died in infancy, Mar qtr 1852 Ormskirk, but no age in the index at this date.

Saskatchewan Probate Files ( Estate files, no. 320 (cont.)-367, 1919 - image 9 shows the first page of the will and image 10 the remainder ) shows the will of Harry Welch and confirm that the death in British Columbia was him - this link shows the will and mentions his married daughter and adopted daughter - Jane Baker, Sophia Baker, Elizabeth Buchanan and Florence Welch - page 15 refers to the adopted daughter as Florence Welch.
