Am I Related to My Favourite Actor?
« on: Friday 19 February 16 16:32 GMT (UK) »
I've not looked to much into my y-DNA results as there is obviously nothing to tie it in with my paper trial, as of yet.

However, I just downloaded the entire batch and started looking through the names when I noticed a large portions of Harrelson, Harrells and variants. Looking into the ancestry of actor, Woody Harrelson, I found one of my matches is a relative; and most of the earliest ancestors all go back to the same country in South Carolina.

These all match on my y-DNA-12, at ~90% for 24 generations. There are 17 matches to Harrelsons and variants. Should this be considered as fact or is there a chance this is noise?

Also, what is the realistic time frame for MRCA? The Harrelsons are evidently from Denmark; whereas although my paternal paper trial is Welsh my real paternal line is evidently English, seemingly being a descendant of the Tathams.

apologies I am no help with advice regarding your potential connection.

However, I agree he is an absolutely wonderful actor. I would also love to be related to him  :)

Your yDNA results for a y12 test say you have a 90 per cent chance of matching at 24 generations.

ftDNA say in their learning center section to use 25 years for each generation. So on your results it would imply there are 600 years (25 X 24) to your most common recent ancestor. More detailed tests eg y37, y67 or y111 could narrow it down further

Now the bad news. You have over 33 million ancestors at 25 generations

James Stott c1775-1850. James was born in Yorkshire but where? He was a stonemason and married Elizabeth Archer (nee Nicholson) in 1794 at Ripon. They lived thereafter in Masham. If anyone has any suggestions or leads as to his birthplace I would be interested to know. I have searched for it for years without success. Thank you.

just heard the other day that his mother was sister to Lee Harvey Oswald and that's why the older harrelson (basically a brother-in-law) was  always implicated in the murder of JFK as being one of the three tramps.. is that true from what you've delved into?
I knew they implicated them long ago but never understood how they made the connection to them until I read that online!  don't mean to zigzag the thread ,though. all hearsay, really

I'd heard his father was a hitman, but I didn't know Leon Oswald was his uncle. What a superb pedigree!

Have to admit, I'm a sceptic on that front too.

I don't understand family DNA stuff at all!  Too complicated for my little brain!

But for crime solving it's great!
