Leahy's pre 1800 in Kilkenny?
« on: Friday 26 February 16 03:06 GMT (UK) »
My Leahy line starts with Michael Leahy born 1769 married Mary Burgess born 1774. 10 Children and lived in Mitchelstown around 1823-1825 before leaving for Canada.
Anyone have anything about this branch of the Leahy's as paperwork for immigration lists Kilkenny as the homeland.
Leahy- Mitchelstown-1825
Crawford-Lurgan-1850 - 1899
Malone- 1794-1850

I had family living in Mitchelstown, the Fathers name Michael Leahy and have baptismal certs showing his children from 1792-1819. The family left for Canada in 1825. ...

I found out from a family member that visited Ireland on a genealogy search that our Leahy family came from Tipperary and moved to Cork then Canada in 1825. I have no clue where in Tipperary but Michael leahy was born in 1769. He was RC and started a family in Cork in 1793. He married Mary Burgess.

I have been searching for years on line to link my Mitchelstown 1820's to their birth place prior. Michael Leahy and family lived and worked on the earl of Kingston's land from 1794 until leaving for Canada in 1825. I have found no origin for them and a family member says he was told stories from the elders that the origin of Leahy is from Kilbenny.
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!
