Yorkshire Place Name - Ampleforth area?
« on: Sunday 28 February 16 13:59 GMT (UK) »
I have a man (William Farndale) whose birth place changes in various censuses but is most likely to be in the Ampleforth area. On the 1871 census (whilst living in Settrington) his birthplace appears as shown on this image. Transcribed on Ancestry as Fegleg ?

Can someone with a knowledge of the area suggest what/where it may be ?

It looks a bit like Filey (on the coast near Robin Hoods Bay) to me.

Here's a webpage with a list of places in Yorkshire to give other ideas of what it could be.

Thanks for the suggestion. Filey would be too far away from places given on other records, so I think I have to discount that.

Still looking for any other suggestions.

Other records for this man give a birthplace of Bishop Wilton  or Ampleforth.

I don't think that you should discount Filey

Googling distances  :-\

From Settrington where he is living
to Bishop Wilton about 17 miles
to Ampleforth about 20 miles
to Filey about 21 miles

I see that his father is Elijah from his marriage

There is an Elijah/Elisha in Bishop Wilton bn c1796 in Bishop Wilton in 1841
H0107/1216 bk21 f3 page 1

possible marriage to Jane Foster (transcript says Elias Farnel) 23 November 1814 at Bishop Wilton

I wonder if the enumerator couldn't read the original handwriting and had a guess at the place name?

There must have been two letters in the word with "hanging" tails such as "y", "g" "j", "p" "q" "z".

From Ampleforth there's an 8 mile walk east south east to "Slingsby" or an 8 miles walk westward to Bagby.

For reference RG10; Piece: 4822; Folio: 85; Page: 5

The first capital looks very similar to 'F' of 'Farmer' & 'Farmer's wife' in earlier lines.

May be his baptism - the actual parish record may show where the parents were living.

BT entry says Ampleforth.  Elias is a Labourer.

Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.
