George Rosvall b.1875 Grimsby
« on: Tuesday 01 March 16 06:19 GMT (UK) »
I'm helping a friend look for her grandfather, George Rosvall before he lived in Canada.
From his marriage certificate he was married to a Clara Grace (on the cert as Grice) in 1910 in Brenda, Manitoba and we have him in 1916 in Rocanville, Saskatchewan with Clara and their 2 children Adli (b.1912 Sask'wan)and George (b.1916 Sask'wan). In 1930 Clara returns to UK with son George but no Adli. We don't know why or what happened to her husband.
George (b.1875 in Grimsby) went to Canada in 1905 but we can't find him before that. From the marriage cert his parents are given as Andrew Anderson and Brita O'Brian. His father was definitely Swedish so the spelling could be Anderssen or a variation, first name possibly Anders. Brita is a Swedish name so I'm wondering if O'Brian was transcribed from Olsen. At some point George changed his name to Rosvall, possibly because of a family scandal. There is a birth for a George John Anderson, born 1874 and registered in Caistor (registration district for Grimsby), certificate being sent for.
George (1875) was a blacksmith but we can't find him in UK at all. If he was living in Sweden as a child I don't know how to check that out. My guess is that his father was a sailor or fisherman.
Does anyone have any ideas how to proceed?

Thank you all so much for your help, particularly Maureen. I've passed on the information to my friend. She said she thought there had been a suicide but I don't think she knew it was her grandfather. It would account for the fact that George's widow returned to UK a few months later with her son. Everyone was so much more secretive in those days and any scandal wasn't spoken about.

As a post script, my friend has forwarded me 2 newspaper clippings from the Winnipeg Tribune, first dated Dec 27th 1929, the second Jan 2nd 1930, reporting the disappearance of 2 Labour leaders representing the Brotherhood of Railroad employees and saying that foul play was suspected. Their names were Rosvall and Vouletanien. As George was found dead quite soon after, perhaps it was just made to look like suicide!!

Ah. Don't think that was George, though.
Just googling Rosvall and Voutilainen brings up a number of articles:
.....
note on the Finnish immigrant radicals and their Canadian experience.
The event is the disappearance and death of two Finnish union organiz-
ers, Viljo Rosvall and John Voutilainen, during a lumber strike near Port
Arthur in 1929. etc.\.....
...

Although it IS interesting that on the same page as an article about these two there seems to be a reference to what might be George's death: Frozen Body of Man Discovered, etc.
