Maulden - ODELL

A full transcript of the marriage of John Odell to Catherine Hine 14 Oct 1824 at Maulden would be very useful in helping me progress my Odell line. Thank you.

Hi Paul

I will make a note to check the marriage in the libray next Monday when I pass by. Is there anything else you would like me to check whilst I'm there?

Regards

criggy

Hi Criggy

Thank you for the kind offer. If you have the time, transcriptions of this Maulden marrriage

15 Jul 1836 - Charles Underwood & Ann Bass

and these two Clophill marriages

22 Mar 1856 - George Underwood & Mary Lammas
24 Dec 1859 - Henry Grummitt & Susan Odell

would be very useful.

Thanks again.
Paul

Maulden Parish Church

No 120 14.10.1824

John Odell, bachelor of this parish
& Catherine Hine, spinster of this parish were married in this Church by banns by me Edmd R Williamson Curate
The Mark of John X Odell
Catherine L Hine (It did not say "the mark" of but the middle L could be her mark)
Wit: Joseph Odell & Wm Stanbridge (Wm Stanbridge signed several entries so most likely not a relative)

Also came across this:

2.9.1814
James Odell Labourer of this parish (it didn't say bachelor)
& Elizabeth Billingham of this parish, spinster
by banns by Wm Ralfe Rector
The mark X of James Odell & X Elizabeth Billingham
Wit: Robert Gudgin & Hannah Gudgin both signed

No 216 15.7.1836
Charles Underwood of the parish of Clophill & Ann Bass of this parish were married in this Church by banns with consent of parents by Charles Ward Rector
Both signed
Wit: John Bass X his mark & Ann Brown

Clophill Parish Church

No 151 22.3.1856

George Underwood 35 Bachelor Labourer of Clophill father Thomas Underwood deceased
Mary Lomas 28 Spinster of Clophill father Thomas Lomas Labourer
both left their marks
Wit: David Mardlen X & Elizabeth Kedge (signed)

The above witnesses also witnessed the next marriage which was between George Evans & Sarah Mardlen

The entry was faint especially the bit where George's father's first name was but it did look exactly like the Thomas below it so think I'm correct.

No 177 24.12.1859

Henry Grummite (looked like an e rather than a t) 21 Bachelor Labourer of Clophill (no father's name on the entry I'm afraid - just left blank)
Susan Odell 22 Spinster of Clophill father John Odell deceased
X Mark of Henry Grummitt (looked like two t's this time)
Susan Odell signed
Wit: X George Wilden (not sure about the W) & Betsy Kitchener

Hope this helps

Regards

criggy

Hi again

Just found this entry on the back of my sheet! It may or may not be useful.

Maulden No 72 13.12.1820

Thomas Hine of Higham Gobion in the county of Bedford, bachelor
& Mary Ann Northwood of this parish, spinster & a minor by licence with consent of parents (her father) John Northwood were married by Wm Ralfe, Rector
Thomas Hine (signed), Mary Ann Northwood
Wit: James ?Simond & Elizabeth Northwood.

Seem to have forgotten to put whether the others left their marks or signed.

I also came across these in our local heritage magazine which are probably nothing to do with your line but you never know:

Toddington banns 1754-1812 (For entries not in the marriage list)

15.6.1788 John Odell of Toddington and Ann Simons of Harlington

& an early Underwood marriage:

Toddington Marriages 1722-1812

15.11.1736 Francis Underwood of Ampthill, tailor & Sarah Easie of Harlington, servant

Hi Paul
I have a Samuel Underwood born Clophill circa 1822. I haven't followed this line back any further but he has sons named Thomas and George so could possibly be a brother of your George. Will let you know if I find out anything else.
Cheers Jan ;)

Hi Jan,

I'm not sure where that Samuel Underwood fits into the Underwoods of Clophill. I do have a Samuel Underwood with no history other than a birth and a baptism, but he was born 6 years earlier.

Hi Paul
Yes I've got that birth and baptism as a tentative for my Samuel but as you say the age is six years out and he is consistent about his age on all censuses but also consistent about his birthplace as Clophill. A likely death for him in 1897 gives his age as 80 which would fit with his being the Samuel born 1816 though. So as you say don't know where he fits ??? :-\ Will have to put out a request for an 1841 lookup for Clophill in the hope he is there with family.
