How do I know for sure if these are my ancestors?
« on: Thursday 03 March 16 16:05 GMT (UK) »
Hi all,
Thanks to the good people in FindMyPast I finally after such a long time MIGHT have baptism records for my great grandfather and his brother (which in turn gives me a possible maiden name for their mother).

My question is, without knowing their mothers maiden name and having a variety of possible birth dates from various censuses, hospital admission, burial records etc, what do I need to do now to try to nail it down?

You must work backwards from you.
It's the best way and then you don't get incorrect info.
If you need any help send me a message.

Denise,
as Maggsie says, work back but be careful not to post the names of persons who are or could be still living.
If you have not already done so, posting the census information you have may be a starting point.
You seem to have a lot of information already.
People here are very willing to help and share techniques.
Regards
Heywood

Thanks Heywood and Maggsie for your helpful replies. I have been looking into this side of my family for many years now but have nothing concrete relating to before the death of their father in 1868.

What I have is this (..and they are all well dead, so no problem with naming living people here  ;D)

Father: William McEvoy  b. ~1823 (from burial records)  d. Nov 1868 (mercantile clerk, address was 79 Meath Street)
Mother: Elizabeth b. ~1821 (again from burial records) d Dec 1887 (wife of mercantile clerk!, address was 5 James St North, North Strand)
Children that I know of and dobs based on references to age:
1901     1911    burial    death cert   other
John            1858      1853   1860      1860          Admission to hosp in 1916   1854
James         1863      1863   1858      1858
Elizabeth      1871     1865   1868 (BUT not sure if this is her as cant find where she is buried)

James got married in 1909 and I have any amount of information on him going forward as he is my great grandfather.

John and Elizabeth were living in Ushers Island for 1911 census, this is also Johns address at birth (James buried him)

I have found baptism records for a John (1853) and James (1858) with parents William and Eliza Seery. Nothing for their sister Elizabeth but as their mother didnt remarry I presume Elizabeth died shortly before or very shortly after her father died in Dec 1868. The family were living in Meath Street at the time and unfortunately there is a gap in baptism records for St Catherines between 1866 and 1871 so if she was baptised there we wont find that - and noone that appear to be her is showing up in the newly released church records.

This is probably as clear as mucky water - please shout if you have any questions

I have problems with the child Elizabeth ???
If she was on the 1901 & 1911 census, how could she be buried in 1868?

Hi Dawn,
I think Denise means that is the year of their birth according to these records.
Do you have the burial records from Glasnevin ?

.

But not clear.  This Elizabeth is the child not the mother, and no indication is given as far as I can see that she has a burial/death certificate for the child Elizabeth. Wouldn't the DC say where she was buried?

Hi all - many thanks for your replies, I will try to address them below:

Sorry Dawn - I wasnt very clear, they were indeed the suggested year of birth, based on census and death record.

I have burial records (all glasnevin) for the parents and for John and James but not sure the one I have for Elizabeth is her. She is not buried with any other family members that I'm aware of (knowing that they may well have had other siblings that I dont know about). We have a death cert for an Elizabeth McEvoy, spinster,  age 62 (then born in 1867/68), died on 1 Feb 1930 with an address of St Declans Terrace, Marino and buried in Mount Jerome by a gentleman called Joseph R Graham

I've looked into the Eliza Hudson possibility before and ruled her out for some reason that totally escapes me now... will check back on my notes to see why

thanks to all
Denise
