Any way to find out when someone left England?
« on: Monday 18 July 05 19:28 BST (UK) »
Hi all,

My great grandparents were married in Leeds 1n 1913.  My grandfather was born in Canada in 1915.  Can anyone offer suggestions on if there is a way to find out when they left England? Do I start in Canada or England...? Thanks for any replies!

Normally you check the country they arrive at since.  For Canada, there are passenger lists you can check.  The National Archives of Canada web site address is  http://www.genealogy.gc.ca/10/100803_e.html

Best of Luck

Hi Rotella!

You'll probably get better results if you post on the Emigrants board for Canada (*) - the people that look at that board are more likely to help you with the right information -  as they have the information at their finger tips

Thanks Annie, appreciate it.

I checked the site Bruce suggested...but being that I am such a beginner to this journey I couldn't find a way to look at the passenger list.  I will try again today and see if I just missed the option somewhere.

Rotella,

Unfortunately, the only records available on line are from 1925 to 1935 and available at the address  http://www.collectionscanada.ca/archivianet/02011802_e.html  .  The other years are on microfilm.  The web address which I posted before has the link to show which films cover which periods.  If you live in Canada, you can get the films free of charge through any library.  I'm not sure about their availability if you live outside of Canada.

Thanks Bruce, I do live in Canada so I will contact my local library to enquire. The information you posted may help me in finding some other relatives though (I seem to have alot of misplaced relatives... :( I'm sure as do many other people on the boards!)

Thanks again for your assistance!

Michelle

Hei Michelle,

I notice you have not been on since July. How are you getting on with your research? You have not mentioned any names for your great grandparents so I feel if you require assistance at the English end their names would be a great help.
