Richard Bathe (1807-1848) Bicester and Oxford
« on: Friday 11 March 16 20:24 GMT (UK) »
Richard Bathe ( a Hat Maker) married an Avis, Avice ( death registration 1852 Alice) she can be found on 1851 Census living High Street Oxford HO107/1727 Folio 312 Page 11 her age is shown as 37 and born Beckley Oxfordshire which would give her a birth date of about 1814. However several family trees on Ancestry name her as Avis Charlett baptised 7 Sep 1806 at Beckley looking at the batch files on Family Search she does not appear in those for Beckley. Also the marriage of Richard Bathe to an Avis Charlett is shown as being 21 Sep 1834, which appears according to birth of children to  be correct, and is supposed to have taken place at Iffley. I would appreciate if anyone could confirm these dates and places especially the baptism as if correct would have made her 45 in 1851.

Hi Tony,

From Oxfordshire Family History Society marriage transcripts for St Mary the Virgin, Iffley:

21 September 1834
BATHE   Richard  of St Clements, Oxford
CHARLETT  Avis  of this parish
Wit:  Prudence HARRISS, Benjm CRIPPS            Licence

(No other marriages, baptisms or burials for BATHE or CHARLETT at Iffley.)

From Oxford Diocese Marriage Bonds at http://whipple.org/oxford/diocesan_marriage_bonds.html#B
Same names and parishes of residence, both aged 21, licence issued 6 September 1834.

Will now check Beckley.

Thank you Carole, not direct line so not prepared to pay for certificate if other help is available
Many thanks Carol for the baptism and marriage confirmation, much obliged.
I always like to check any information I find on any Family Trees.

Hi Tony,

Just one more piece of evidence from OFHS Beckley burials:

6 April 1852    BATHE  Avis  46

The age and location suggest that this is the 'Evis' baptised in 1806, QED.

Finally, a bit of local knowledge.  The 'High Street' where this family lived in 1841/51 was later renamed St Clement's Street to avoid confusion with the more glamorous High Street in the city centre.  (I grew up nearby and often caught a bus from St Clement's.)

Hi Carol
Thank you for the additional information this ties in with the death of Alice(sic) Bathe 1852 2 Quarter in Headington Registration District which I understand includes St Clements. My thanks also for the local knowledge regarding the High Street.
