Eleanor Colvin aged 24 of 16 Flag? Lane, age same as 1961 and 1871 census'
fathers name Oliver Colvin (mariner, deceased)

The Oliver Colvin we have been discussing I think died in 1874 in Sunderland. Daughter Mary Ann in 1881.

The 1871 census shows her as being born in 1855
No it doesn't. The original census never shows a date of birth. If you are looking at something that 'shows her as being born in 1855', you are looking at a transcription, not the original census.

Unfortunately most of the sites that have transcriptions insert a 'year of birth' which is (a) not in the original document and (b) miscalculates the year in about three out of four cases because the census was usually taken about the begiining of April, when only about a quarter of the population had had a birthday in that year.

Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.

I agree Monica - Oliver Colvin, Mariner, appears with wife Jane and 5-year-old Mary on 1841 Census.  Jane is alone, but recorded as married (Mariner's wife) with 15-year-old Mary in 1851. Then Oliver, a widower and school master on 1861, with 25-year-old Mary. So not deceased when Eleanor/Ellean married in 1858.
Is there another Oliver Colvin?
Regarding the name Alice, I have a female relative called Ellis although her proper Christian name is Helen.....wonder if the name Ellis was given to an enumerator if it could be recorded as Alice?

Looby :)

I did check the actual 1871 census return which clearly shows Rebecca's age as 16, this would equate to an 1864/65 birth year and would explain why she was not on the 1861 census return.

Not sure about this - Ellen was married on the 7th Feb 1858 aged 24 Which would mean she was born on or before 7th Feb 1934 making this Colvin no more than 16 1/2 at conception. Hope my maths are correct.

With this Oliver born in 1807 and Ellen/Alice born 1833-34, he would have been aged c. 26.

This Oliver is the only one showing up in records so far isn't he. Right age, occupation and even showing up on Sunderland in later years where Ellen/Alice settled.

That parish marriage entry in 1834 in London with Oliver showing as a bachelor, further confuses matters.

Could Ellen have been illegitimate?

Did she show as a domestic servant when she married? I checked on the 1851 & 1861 for Flag Lane. There are no entries in the listing for a No. 24 in both years but there is for No. 16.

A John Spence, shipwright, and wife Mary show at that address for both years. They have a domestic servant in the household on both censuses. So, wondering if that is what Ellen was doing there at the time of her marriage in 1858.

Hi,

There is an Ann Colvin age recorded as 21 , occupation - house servant, birthplace Shetland at Grey Terrace, Sunderland in the household of John Croudace and his wife and young daughter.
Thought I'd point her out due to the ambiguity of Ellean/Eleanor name....as for Alice  ;D ....no clue.
I know her age is not correct either but this info could've been supplied by the head of household and may not be accurate.

Looby :)

Ignore this - think I've found this woman on 1861 Census ::)
