Swindon Parish Registers and/or BTs
« on: Wednesday 16 March 16 23:54 GMT (UK) »
Is anyone able to do a look up in the parish registers or Bishops' Transcripts for Swindon? I am looking for reference to the name Wayt (or Wait) between about 1655 and 1690.

In particular I am looking for any references to children of Thomas Wayt.

Many Thanks

Matthew

Thanks for that. However sadly this hasn't been any help to me at the moment. I have been through the records on Familysearch several times and so far I've not found any record of a Mary Wayt who could fit into my tree. The Wiltshire and Swindon History Centre have told me that not all of the Swindon records are on familysearch.org so it is possible my Mary is missing. My Mary married John Keen in 1701 and was probably born between 1670 and 1686, or possibly slightly earlier (John was born in about 1675). The only Mary I found on this list was born in 1722 so obviously cannot be the Mary I am looking for.

I have found a will for a Thomas Wayt which looks like it is for Mary's father. This is dated 1734 and apparently mentions a daughter Mary Keen. I don't think this can be the Thomas who had a daughter named Mary christened in 1722 unless she was 12 or less when married lol! Therefore there must be a Mary born earlier. If the will mentions other family members this might help me narrow down who I am looking for and track down Mary's family.

Many thanks again

Matt

There is a marriage licence bond for John KEENE and Mary WAYT on FindMyPast, year 1701

Does that hold anymore info on the couple ?

Hi Claire

These are indeed my ancestors. However it merely states that John Keen was a batchelor of Hankerton and that Mary Wayt was a spinster 'of Eastcote, Swindon'. The bondsman was one Thomas Wayt who I suspect was either Mary's father or brother.

I have found a christening for a Mary Wayt daughter of Thomas in 1722 but obviously this can't be the Mary who married John Keen. John was born in about 1675 and so I suspect that Mary was probably born in the 1670s or 1680s. I have found that there is a will for Thomas Wayt of Swindon dated 1736 in the Wiltshire and Swindon History Centre. This includes mention of a daughter named Mary Keen. Now unless the Mary who was born in 1722 married someone with the name Keen/Keene before she was 14 this will must relate to a Thomas who had a daughter born before 1700, and more likely before 1685.

The search continues.......

Many Thanks

Matt

I have now found John's will and a Bill of Complaint in Chancery which seems to revolve around the question of whether or not the will was valid. Both mention three sons, Thomas Keene, Richard Keene, and Wayte Keene and the Bill of Complaint also names Thomas Wayte. More importantly the Bill also names Sylvester Keen as 'another son of John Keene, and elder brother of Thomas, Richard and Wayte Keene'.

Can anyone help me trace any of the following in Swindon:

Burials for Thomas Keene between 1733 and 1805
Marriages for Thomas Keene between 1750 and 1775
Burials for Richard Keene between 1738 and 1815
Marriages for Richard Keene between 1747 and 1775

References to christenings for children of Sylvester Keen between 1740 and 1760.

Burials for Sylvester Keen and Alathia Keene between 1738 and 1800

Thanks

Hi Matt

Are you just looking at deaths in Swindon ? There are quite a lot in Minety, isn't that where John Keen and Mary Wayt married ?

claire

EDIT: there are lots of Keens in Minety  :)

Wayt Keen married in Bristol as WEIGHT KEEN to a Jane Fisher and their childrens records are NC baptisms.

Thanks for that. I think Swindon is the best place to start looking for Thomas or Richard's marriage or burial simply because I know they were christened there but know nothing else about them. They could have moved somewhere else though obviously.

Yes there are a lot of Keens in Minety, which as you say is where John and Mary married. Their son Sylvester was born in Hankerton but I have no idea where the other children where born at the moment.

Thanks for the information about Wayt Keen. I have seen the name spelt Wait, Waite, and even Weyt but I hadn't even thought about Weight as a spelling. I will check Bristol for any other references to the Keen name though.

When were Wayt (or Weight) and Jane married? I cannot find them on Familysearch but haven't checked Ancestry or Findmypast yet. Do you know the names of their children or have the dates they were born/died?

Btw what did you mean when you said that their children's records are 'NC baptisms'?

Many thanks again

Matt
