Place Name - Co Cavan
« on: Thursday 17 March 16 19:15 GMT (UK) »
Good evening

Today, I received a copy of my Gt Grandfather's Birth Certificate.

Edward Hassett was born in 1867 in Co Cavan - his birth was registered in the district of Kilnaleck.

I'm really struggling to read the place name where the family lived and where Edward was born. It looks like 'Grove, Aughaeveery' but I can't seem to find any reference to such a place.

The place name is written 3 times on the certificate, so I've attached all 3 scanned copies.

Can anyone help with deciphering the name? I'm hoping someone with better local knowledge than me may be able to help!

Many thanks in anticipation.

David

Aghacreevy townland according to SeanRuad's site (Aughacreevy's just another spelling)- Ballymachugh civil parish & Cavan Poor Law Union/Registration district.

The townland to the east of Aghacreevy is called Bellsgrove.

Many thanks for your kind responses... mystery solved!

Aghacreevy... that's a new one for me and a potential source for further research.

I'm presuming the 'Grove' part of the address is likely to be a district / region / area of Aghacreevy, maybe even a 'local' name to describe where they lived in the town.

Thanks again for your help!

David

Aghacreevy is the townland not a town but 'Grove' could certainly be the local name used for part of that townland.

Aah, right, thanks Aghadowey for putting me right there!

Thanks hallmark for your info... sorry to show my ignorance here but are all those references concerning Hassett wills? Could be interesting and I'll certainly look into it.

Regards

David
