Powell family from Blaina

Looking for information on John Powell (my ggg-grandfather).  According to a works certificate I have, he was born 30 March 1833, Blaina.  Son of Lewis Powell (1781-1867) Blaina - occupation - ag lab.
John moved to Glamorgan, and married Ann John in 1867.  They lived in Llantrisant where he was an agent at an Iron Ore Mine. John died in 1888 in Cilfynydd, Glamorgan. 
I am hoping you can help me break through this 'wall'.  I cannot find a birth entry for him.  Or census 1861/71/81.

Just lucky by looking for Mary, no surname, born c 1817 Llanedy, Breconshire, living in Monmouthshire.

I must admit the handwriting is bad.

1871 Census has Vavaser Powell, 49 (1822),  born Blaina, Monmouthshire, Wales.
He is living at Parrot Row, Aberystruth

It is the John Powell family I am particularly interested in - parents and siblings.  I have the next generations all well documented.  It is all very confusing.
I have the same family in the 1841 census, but by the time we get to the 1851 census Verion is no longer female and the same age as Kezia!  But is male and known as Vavasser.

looks like it is back to the drawing board for the birth records of John Powell.
