Also, another Joseph HUNTER 15620/1863  at Young NSW

Sorry, a researcher has a death for this man at Grafton.

There are two deaths on the indexes register to A Henry H Hunter and wife Rebecca up to 1900.

https://familyhistory.bdm.nsw.gov.au/lifelink/familyhistory/search/result?7

Robert b1860 at Mudgee d1860 at Mudgee Ref # 4847/1860
and
Henry H b1857at Wellington d1871 at Grenfell Ref # 2998/1871

This makes William b1859 at Wellington the eldest son.

Your original post requested parents of Joseph HUNTER and his wife Mary DEVLIN.

Summarising: (coz I'm too lazy to keep scrolling to find various pieces of info :P )

Joseph's parents:
 Henry Hope HUNTER
Rebecca COWEN, died 1873 Grenfell, 1873; Daughter of Robert and Mary COWEN

Marriage, NSW, 1856, #1679, registered at Mudgee
Henry Hope HUNTER
Rebecca COWEN

Joseph HUNTER, b abt 1859-64 at Young NSW,
lived in: Grenfell 1882, Qld abt 1893, WA by 1897, d WA 1922

There are a couple of what look to be well-researched public trees which give much info re Henry Hope and Rebecca, including photos of register entries. Happy to summarise those but it would probably be better if you have a look at them yourself if you can.  You should be able to access Ancestry at a public library or they sometimes have short-term free trial access offers.

Read them carefully though as there are a few discrepancies, and you would need to check carefully but there is so much info there which has good BMD and other records.

Now for a look for Mary DEVLIN/DEVELIN.  The trees do not have much info about Joseph HUNTER, only about his parents.

What we know:

Possible marriage:
754/1890 Joseph HUNTER and Mary DEVELIN; Sydney

Death: Mary HUNTER, nee DEVLIN, died 1931 WA, aged 71, (b abt 1860)

Death Notice for Mary
http://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/32354403

Unfortunately there are a few babies who would fit the probable date for Mary but nothing conclusive.  I think that NSW marriage cert or the Qld birth of Margaret Devlin HUNTER born 1893 would help you.

Wow very interesting stuff, thank you for your time and effort here Judith, Neil & Essie!

Yes I did buy the certificate, now to sit back and wait a couple of weeks  :)

It is my maternal aunt's late husband's family. My cousins are interested in knowing more!

Fingers crossed the certificate is informative...

Happy Easter everyone x

oh my - a tantalising wait!!!

If you were feeling flush you could get a direct download for the QLD birth certificate   ;) which should give info re Joseph and his wife's marriage and their birthdates and places - but you will get better info from their marriage certificate.

Do let us know..................

Hm I was happily exploring the Henry Hope & Rebecca HUNTER lead - the fact that the name Lawrence popped up piqued my interest - when I realised Essie's post states there was a death for this Joseph b. 1863 in Young found in Grafton. I cannot find it...

BUT there is a marriage for a Joseph HUNTER in Young in 1894 to Susan GORDON, they had 7 children in Young, and she died in 1944. This seems to fit neatly with where his brothers and one of his sisters settled (ie Grenfell area).

Ah well I will have to wait til the certificate arrives...will keep you posted!  :D

I can't see a death registered in Grafton for any Joseph HUNTER, except a Joseph Garnet G HUNTER, died 1959, parents John Charles Samuel and Elizabeth Ann.

I was going to make a comment about your Joseph marrying in Sydney, going to Qld and then finishing up in WA while the rest of the family seemed not to move far from Grenfell/Young - not that it's really significant.

I note this death:
1941   #26641, registered Young
Laurence HUNTER
Parents: Henry Hope, Rebecca

Interesting to look at headstones recorded and photographed at the Young cemetery, (link below) which may help untangle some of the complexities, especially with the use of the same forenames over generations.  For example NSW BMDs show these deaths registered at Young:
Doris E HUNTER d 1906, parents Joseph and Susan
Doris HUNTER, d 1910, parents Henry H and Elizabeth

There is also a Henry Hope HUNTER, d 1951, son of William and Marion who would be at least the 3rd person of that name, and there is a person using the name as a second forename as late as 1908.

This site lists only burials with headstones, not those without.

Some more snippets - sorry I think some of them are already posted
Obit for William HUNTER d 1941

Good luck!! Judith

mollipops1,

John (Jack) Croesus HUNTER married my cousin-once-removed as his second wife. I have her ancestors and many of his (not her) descendants.
His first marriage was in WA but the children were all born in NZ.

Can I be any help?

Terry
