Calden/Callaghan surname variation
« on: Monday 28 March 16 22:03 BST (UK) »
Has anyone come across the surname Calden as being a variant of Callaghan? I have Calden ancestors (in England from 1860's) who all originate from Cork. However a search of the Cork parish registers results in no Caldens at all in the 1830 -1840 period I am researching. The first census record I have them in in England they are listed as Callan, and in subsequent censuses always as Calden. So I was wondering if there's a possibility that they started out as Callaghan or something similar.

Hi,
There are 3 Calden births (exact spelling)
Isabella 3rd Sept. 1820
Father William (42foot reg) Mother Catherine. in Co. Kilkenny.
The next 2 are later 1874 and 1877.
There are 3 Calden listed in 1852 in Cork in Griffiths valuation and a family of  Calden in the 1901 census in Cork.
Is Isabella a name you are looking for?

Hi Maggsie, many thanks for your reply and information. Unfortunately none of those match the ones I'm looking for. Although any Caldens from Cork information is great to have as they may well be related.

I have Charles Calden born Cork, 1839, with parents John and Johanna Calden. His also has a sister Ellen Calden, born 1843, Cork.

Hi Ann,
Great, thanks for the info. Yes, it's been entered as Callaghan.
Going by the years you gave, Johanna's maiden name was TOBIN.
I did get a marriage for John and Johanna in 1843, unusual at that time but it happens.

That's great Maggsie, many thanks for your help. I was beginning to think I wouldn't be able to get back any further with the Caldens, so that's fantastic.

It's interesting how their surname has changed, but great to have the new information.
