William John Phillips
« on: Thursday 31 March 16 09:56 BST (UK) »
This gentleman is my grandfather, born 29 Jul 1888 in Portsmouth Hampshire.he married on 10 Oct 1911 Ethel Victoria Andrews born 29 Oct 1887 in Portsmouth Hampshire.
I am having a problem finding details about them on the 1911 census.
Using a copy of the marriage certificate I found a 'Mr Phillips' on the 1911 census summary for 39 Maitland Street,Portsmouth  (could be him?) but for Ethel Victoria her marriage cert address shows 'Mrs Eades' 39 Upper Church Path,Portsmouth and it being a private dwelling.(friend?)
Can some kind soul with more expertise than me find more details of them? Many Thanks david

Hello David,

Unfortunately we cannot give information from 1911 census.
Do you have Ethel's father's name from the marriage certificate?
I can see her, or probably her in 1901 with mother Rachel, a widow and sister Dorothy.

Do you have this information?

Regards
Heywood

Ethel Victoria's father was Charles Andrews who was deceased at the time of her marriage.
Her mother was Rachel (nee Humm) and she did have 2 sisters Dorothy and Kate
Thanks for your help.

And do you have William John's parents/other family?
I am Zoe Northeast, granddaughter of Maximilian Double.

It is with great difficulty I share with you that in the early hours of 07 August 2021, Maximilian passed away unexpectedly but peacefully.

With deep sadness,
Zoe

William Johns parents were Henry (harry) Philliips Born 3 Feb 1856 Portsmouth and Emma Elizabeth (nee Williams) born  30 Jan 1867 .They married on 8 Nov 1885.
Henry died 19 Jun 1911 and Emma 27 Sep 1917.I believe that William John had a brother George.
Thank You.david

Tracing back through 1891 and 1901 there is a family of Henry and Emma Phillips in Portsmouth

including children
William born circa 1888 Portsmouth
and
George born circa 1886 Portsmouth,

cannot say anymore about 1911 but I suggest these 2 addresses  might well have been addresses for convenience upon marriage, perhaps you could recheck inhabitants on 1911, sorry can't help you there

Hi,

Have you discounted the 23 year old Ethel ANDREWS, a visitor in the KERCHER household?

Rachel and Dorothy are living in the same road as the marriage address, but in 54.

Regards,
Daisy

It looks like William had another brother, Henry John born abt. 1904.

What was William's occupation on his marriage cert.? It might help find him in a local directory.
