Is this taken at Easterhouse?
« on: Friday 01 April 16 09:46 BST (UK) »
I know this is a long shot! I'm trying to find out if this photo was taken at a school in the Easterhouse area. My Uncle, James (Jim) Colquhoun who was born in 1914 is in the photo (front row on the right) The family moved into Westerhouse Farm, Easterhouse sometime between 1919 and 1921. Any help would be very much appreciated. Thank you.

No sign of Colquhouns in the Easterhouse area on the 1920 Valuation Rolls on Scotlands People. Likely family moved there after the VR was prepared for that year.

Thank you for your reply MonicaL. I can't find the family anywhere on the 1920 Valuation Roll on SP. I know the family lived at Tayvallich, Argylleshire until at least April 1919 as my Mum was baptised there on that date. My Mum's younger brother was born at Westerhouse Farm, Easterhouse in May 1921. Out of interest, what age do you think my Uncle looks in the photo? Thank you.

About 8-9 perhaps. The girls certainly look in that range.

Does anyone know if there are trade directories available online for approximately 1920/21 which might include my Grandparents farm - Westerhouse, Easterhouse? Any information about the farm, which I understand no longer exists, would be appreciated. Does anyone know which school would've been nearest to the farm? Thank you.

They are not nor is the farm listed in the Slater`s for 1921 but then Slater's doesn't include everyone.

Maybe you can find them in other directories.
https://archive.org/details/scottishdirectories?&sort=-downloads&page=2

They won't show in the Valuations as the owner and occupant was James Alexander, farmer so if the Colquhoun's were farm labourers they would not be listed.  James Baird had this by 1925 it was now a shooting club and the occupant was John Murdock, Gamekeeper.  A John Hodge had the farm by 1930.  The only definitive proof of them being at Westerhouse will be in the 1921 birth which you will have to order.

Thank you DonM for your reply - I'll have a look through the directories. One of my relatives has sent me the birth certificate details for my Uncle who was born at Easterhouse. He was born 1st May 1921 at Westerhouse Farm, Easterhouse and the occupation of his father is Farm Manager. Maybe the family stayed in a farm cottage or they moved into the farm shortly after the 1921 directory that you mentioned when the Alexander family occupied it. The mystery continues!
