st kentigerns cemetery glasgow
« on: Friday 01 April 16 22:26 BST (UK) »
hi all, me again. Can anyone tell me if its possible to find out the lair number of an old grave and if so who would I contact? Also, is it possible to find all the names of people interred in the same grave?                                   I've been told that people were sometimes buried wherever there was an available space, and not necessarily the same family. The burials would have taken place around the early 1900,s.

Hi, your best bet for information is to contact the Glasgow City Archives in the Mitchell Library. They can be reached via e-mail at archives@glasgowlife.org.uk if you are not near enough to visit them in person. The staff is always very helpful. Just make sure to give them as much information as you have to assist in the search. Kim

Hi if you look on this website     www.memento-mori.co.uk     and click on search burial location indices you will find St Kentigerns. ( scroll down the list)  There is a list of monumental inscriptions and you may find who you are looking there.
Good luck.

went to the mitchell library and found that there is only one actual grave with a lair number which contains three of the people i was searching for. the rest are buried in common ground. they still have a number, but are not buried together. also discovered another family member died in peebles poorhouse after finding their name in the poor relief records. thanks for pointing me in the right direction.

Hi I wonder if any one could help me. After contacting the Mitchell Library about various relatives buried at St Kentigerns Cemetery, In December we made the pilgrimage from England to the cemetery armed with grave sections and numbers and expected to be led straight to each grave. How wrong was I when we realised that there was no one to ask for help. After 3 hours in the freezing cold we left and returned 2 days later.it was minus 3 degrees with freezing fog but I was determined to find the grave of my mums baby brother and sister who died age 5 and 9 months. They were buried together but had no head stone. Hours later I think possible found found where they might be buried and laid a memorial plaque. I then tried to locate my Grandmother but was unable to as again there was no headstone. I did try to look at numbers of other graves but it was pointless.
My mum has an uncle, aunt and grandparents who were buried together in section 1 with a large cross memorial with names on but I could not find this for love nor money.
Something is pulling me back to the cemetery and I have vowed to go back next summer but I know I will come up against the same problems and wondered if any one can help me at all.
I have tried looking on the memento-more website but their names are not there.

Hello, apologies if this question has been asked before. Andrew, a poster on here, very kindly gave me the section number and lair of my grandmothers grave in St. Kentigerns, unfortunately I've been unable to locate it. Does anyone know if there is a council department that could help with this?

Have you tried asking the cemetery workers? There may be mort cloths kept at the cemetery which they might have access to.

If you have the date of death, there is this online resource available:
