Thanks for all your help John, I am coming around to Ada being William Smith's daughter....however......
Birthdates from school records:
(1883) William George Smith son of Wm Smith, Durleigh labourer 17/7/79
(1884) William George Smith son of Wm Smith, Durleigh labourer 17/7/80
(1884) Frederick Smith son of Wm Smith, Durleigh, labourer 12/11/80
(1885) Fred Smith son of Wm Smith, Durleigh, labourer 12/11/81
Note - I suspect the actual year of birth has been calculated from the age at the time??
(1886) George Smith son of George Smith, Durford Mill, labourer 19/1/82
(1887) Ada Louisa Smith dau of George Smith, Durleigh, labourer 16/11/82
(1888) Ada Louisa Smith dau of George Smith, Durleigh, labourer 16/11/82
(1888) Ada Louisa DAY dau of Edward Ayling, Hale Common, Policeman 2/5/83
(1889) Thomas James Smith son of Wm Smith, Slade Lane, labourer 5/11/85
(1889) Ada Louisa Smith dau of George Smith, Durleigh, labourer 16/11/82
(1890) Lossian Ales Smith son of William Smith, Slade Lane, Rogate, Cowman - birthdate not recorded
(1891) Ada Louisa Smith dau of George Smith, Durleigh, labourer 16/11/82
- no other children of George spotted...I believe I was mistaken with her parents being George & Maria of Portsea - 1891 census for George son of George and Emma born Petersfield at Fernurst does not show an Ada...
Hi
The info I gave is from the original parish registers.
If you look at the end of the very recent Jacob Knowles thread on this board, you'll see that I give a link to an article about how you can get access to them.
Have seen the school records and I am certainly surprised at what they said.
Also have noted that William Smith the cowman and family are in Poynings in 1901, next page on the census to your James + Ada Bristow.
There is only one birth registration -
Dec 1882 Midhurst 2b 412
Smith, Ada Louisa
If you can, it would be very helpful to get hold of a copy.
I did wonder if we would come to regret there being no birth date on that baptism record. It would have been very useful to us now.
Good luck
John
EDIT - Poynings and Pyecombe are thirty plus miles from Rogate, so it doesn't seem too likely to be just coincidence that the Smiths are so close by?
