Which one should I buy??
« on: Saturday 24 July 04 12:42 BST (UK) »
Hi all,
I'm having a dilemma and would like your advice, I can't decide whether to buy the 1861 for Cheshire or the 1861 for Cumberland.
I have a family who would have been in one or the other in '61 but have no idea which one, they had a child in Carlisle in 1858 and one in Birkenhead in 1864. I've asked for look ups for both but looking on stepping stones and s & n niether are released yet. I can't afford to buy both so how do I decide which one?

Hello Ange,

Did you know there is a combined northern counties directory that covers Cheshire, Cumberland, Lancashire and Westmorland for 1855. The date might not be quite right for you but it is a bargain at around £16.00

http://www.rod-neep.co.uk/cgi-bin/sh000016.pl?REFPAGE=http%3a%2f%2fwww%2erod%2dneep%2eco%2euk%2facatalog%2fsitemap%2ehtml&WD=cheshire&SHOP=%20&PREVQUERY=SS%3dcheshire%26ACTION%3dGo%2521%26PR%3d%2d1%26TB%3dA%26SHOP%3d%20&PN=chs%2ddirectories%2ehtml%23a0713#a0713

Perhaps if they are not out yet you could ask for both as Christmas/Birthday presents  :)

Hi Rootschat,
Thanks for the suggestion but I know where they are in 1855 as they had a child that year. I think I may have found a solution as Cheshire FHS do an index booklet for the 1861 Birkenhead, I just need to figure out how to buy it (no order form on the website). I've emailed them so hopefully I'll be able to get the index and see if they are there, and if not I'll just buy the Cumberland one.

Ange,

Sounds good,  unfortunately we do not have any offers of lookups for either of these resources,  so no help there.  :(
