Where is Sarah Werford?
« on: Wednesday 13 April 16 12:36 BST (UK) »
I have been unable to find a marriage for my relative Sarah York. I have found her with her sister Mary Sellin in the 1901 census in Bury, Lancashire, with the married name of Werford. She was widowed at this time. I cant find her in any other census. She was born in 1850 Madeley, Shropshire. Can anyone help?

She was in service in Addingham, Yorks, in 1871.

There is no death for a Werford (nor birth or marriage for that matter) anywhere in England & Wales between 1871 and 1901.  Although the 1901 census is clear as to her surname, I wonder whether the enumerator made an error in transcribing from the household schedule?

A possibility:

YORK Sarah marriage Mar qtr 1871 Rugby vol 6d p500
On same page is Samuel Woodroffe
BUT the page also shows a Joseph York so it is possible he married Sarah who signed her married name instead of her maiden name.
Please help me to help you by citing sources for information.

That is strange the Werford name isn't it  ???

I wonder if she married twice so the second one she wouldn't be Sarah York but  :-\

She could be under a different name in 1881.

Sarah York was still single in 1871 census (2nd April)

When I saw the name Werford I thought it must be an error.

I see that it is very clearly written in the 1901 census, so possibly a transcribing error or the enumerator misheard the surname.

Both Sarah and the head of household, Thomas Sellen or Seller and his wife Mary are from Salop. She is said to be his sister in law. If the family are from Shropshire Sarah is likely to have married there. Have you looked for a marriage for Thomas and Mary? Both Mary and Sarah should have the same maiden names ....  :-\

Added: Apologies for skipping over the posts, I just re-read and note you already have deduced this.

I couldn't find a marriage for Thomas and Mary using Sell*

Is Mary definitely the sister of Sarah or could she be a sister in law related to Thomas - no that wouldn't work she would have the same surname as Thomas  :-\
