William Twist in 1861 census please
« on: Friday 15 April 16 15:30 BST (UK) »
Can anyone help please in finding William Twist (my great grandfather) on the 1861 census.  He was born around 1839 and I presume in Birmingham -  Birmingham was entered as his place of birth on other census entries  -   or certainly the areas around Birmingham.  In June of 1861 he married Mary Ann Baker but at the time of census (March) he would not have been living with her I presume.

He had various occupations    - on his marriage certificate in 1861 he has put Carver,  on his second marriage in 1868, Wood carver, then  on 1871 census,  Salesman.

He is one of those very difficult to track down family members !

Well..he's with his parents in 1841+ 51 at Birmingham

Possible that Twist may have been mis-transcribed in 1861.(not with father Joseph in 61)

Looks like he used his middle name Aston as a surname in 1871/81 so that could also be an option

I think you meant "Lurst" - and yes, I agree that the image says Twist.   :) :)

Ohhh!  So two mistranscriptions - but then the handwriting isn't that good, is it?

As usual I am utterly amazed at the help and kindness of folks on this site !    And always so quickly.  I haven't had chance to find him as  indicated yet  -  but will later tonight.  I just had to respond as soon as I read your postings.

Are you saying you have found him on 1841 and 1961 ?    I have him on 1851 and then the other census entries.  Are you saying that he gives Aston as his middle name then on 1861?!    This chap is one big mystery and conundrum that has taken me years to unravel, and little by little, I find out a bit more.  I have put request on here about him before.    He changed his name from Twist to Aston in 1868 but I have discovered he never was strictly a Twist and was possibly Aston, as that was his mother's name.    But I have never been able to find a birth entry for him, nor find him or his mother Emma on 1841 census.
