Thomas Locke and Sarah Anne Taylor - possibly Nottinghamshire
« on: Tuesday 19 April 16 08:45 BST (UK) »
Hi,
I’m looking for the marriage of Thomas Locke and Sarah Ann Taylor.  Thomas was unmarried and a soldier in 1861 but may have left the army by 1871. Sarah Ann (nee Taylor, from other children records) was probably Roman Catholic and might have been born in Dublin or Nottingham.   Angelina died before 1877 when a second Angelina was christened.

The only marriage I can find is in 1857, before Angelina was born and when Sarah might have been 16/17.   From this, Angelina could not have been registered as Locke.

1871 Census: (part of family)
Thomas Locke       Head         49 Aldbourne, Wiltshire.  born: c 1822
Sarah A Locke      Wife           31 Nottingham.              born:  c 1840
Angelina E Locke   Daughter   12 Nottingham.               born:  c 1859

Thanks,   Anne.

I cant see the 1857 marriage you refer to - but that would fit fine with this birth, wouldn't it?

Aha

1861 Thomas is a soldier, based in Farnborough

That would explain the birth of a child at Aldershot!

I wonder if Sarah has gone back home to Ireland with the baby.
Maybe they were married over there - perhaps Thomas was stationedin Ireland and met and married Sarah and brought her back to England

Hi,
I agree with all the information you have entered, thank you, but do not have the parents of Angelina Eliza Locke born 1859.  Is she the same child as shown as Thomas’s daughter aged 12 on the 1871 Census I posted?  If so, she was born when Thomas was unmarried, 1861, and therefore could not officially be called Locke.

To explain the double baptism:  Thomas was almost certainly Protestant and Sarah Ann may have been Roman Catholic.  ‘30-10-1874 Thomas abode Dean St’- is the father to all the children and it seems that he and his children, baptised before 1874, were baptised a second time at St Patrick’s RC Church.  The last two children, Thomas Joseph 1875 and Angelina 1877 were only baptised once, at St Patrick’s.

I can find no baptism at all for the oldest two – Angelina Eliza, 1859, and Amelia Ann, 1862.

Here is the 1857 marriage: https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:2DQ6-C51

Have you considered the possibility that the 1857 marriage is indeed the people you want, and that Thomas's 1861 census entry stating him to be unmarried is incorrect?

and actually, I've just looked at the page on Ancestry and it looks to me as though someone has overwritten the column and changed the U (unmarried) to M (married).

Hi,
I need to find the age and fathers of the 1857 couple to resolve this one.

I'm learning what fibbers our ancestors were, or was it the enumerators who put in what they thought it should be?  We shall never know.

Anne :)
