Womack/Stevens - where did they go?
« on: Wednesday 20 April 16 14:48 BST (UK) »
I've found a wedding, initially in the BNA, and confirmed in FreeBMD.

BNA Search

FreeBMD Via FamilySearch

So we know that Elizabeth Womack (from Norfolk/Suffolk) married William Stevens Esq, of Bearley Devon, at St George Hanover Square, in early 1863.

The couple should show up nicely in the 1871 Census, but I can't find them.

(I'm actually really after Elizabeth's place and date of birth to resolve an ambiguity, but as always, all information is good).

There are William/Elizabeth Stevens couples in 1871.  But without more info it is impossible to know if any are "possibles"

Did your couple have any children?
How do you know the marriage you have found relates to the people from Devon/Norfolk that you list? (whoops just realised must be in the newspapaer articles)
What are the birth years for your William and Elizabeth?
Edmonds/Edmunds - mainly Sussex
DeBoo - London
Green - Suffolk
Parker - Sussex
Kemp - Essex
Farrington - Essex
Boniface - West Sussex

Any possibles for Elizabeth in 1861 - do we know if she was a widow or spinster when she married?

Her father is the late George Womack of East Dereham - but I've got two of those, both with daughters called Elizabeth; I want to track her birth date so I know which Elizabeth I've got, (and hence which George died in East Dereham).

Wheels within Wheels.

My hope was that the distinctive (and widely separated) places of birth of the couple would render them easy to find and spot.  :-[

I can't even find Bearley in Devon - I was going to go fishing in 1861 for Steven Williams Esq.

(I think FindMyPast might have the full marriage cert image potted clickable search)

One or other may have died by 1871 - have you got anything on them afterwards or is the wedding purely the only info you have?

The wedding was meant to be my hot lead!

I can find a Bearley near Stratford, but that's in Warwickshire.

I found a re-print of the wedding announcement in the Western Times that changed the text of "Bearley, Devon", to "Bearley in this county", so I think it's real.

Perhaps it's a Manor House (or bigger), but not a town?

EDIT: using contemporary newspapers as a glossary/gazeteer (in case of spelling, name or county boundary changes) I can find a Bearley village in Warwickshire, and a Bearley Farm near Tintinhull,. Somerset. Both still exist, and neither is in Devon.

My "prime" Elizabeth candidate is DOB 1817 Ipswich, Suffolk, but she lived in Norwich, Norfolk from a young age.
