Isabella Robinson b 1869?
« on: Sunday 24 April 16 14:02 BST (UK) »
James Dansey was born on January 31, 1891.

On his birth certificate – (The facts are as the informant presented them)

Born in Williams Street, South Yarra, Albert Park City of Melbourne.

His father was stated as James Dansey, Shipping Agent  age 35 (b 1856)  born in New South Wales.

His mother was stated as Isabella Robinson age 22 (b 1869) born in New South Wales.

Marriage of parents 11 Feb 1890 NSW – no previous issue (not previous children from marriage)

Informant: Margaret Shine, Carlton (written in a different handwriting – Allow ???? time made as by law required) – I think this means that the birth was registered late and it was allowed by law a fine might have been involved - but please correct me if I am wrong.

The birth was registered 6 April 1891. This is 65 days after birth – 5 days over the legal requirement?

I cant find his parents, although I can find Margaret. Was there a relationship between Margaret and Isabella or did Margaret run a house for un married mums - please help I have been looking for answers for the last 6 months and am at a loss.

Thank you for reading,

Luv Ted

Oh have to add - I know everything about James from when he was at school with the Christian Brothers - so please don't waste your time on anything after he turned 12

Births in Victoria were and still are, required to be registered within 60 days.

The different handwriting would be Margaret SHINE's signature and her occupation and address should also be noted.  Could it be a signature of the person arranging James's placement bearing in mind that formal adoption was not introduced until the 1920's.

Who were the witnesses - heading 9 on the birth certificate.  Margaret SHINE had address Carlton and the birth was in South Yarra so do you really think she was operating a home for unmarried mothers?

Australian Electoral Roll
1903
SHINE Ellen  19 Grattan Street, Carlton  HD
SHINE Julia  19 Grattan Street, Carlton Dressmaker
SHINE  Margaret 19 Grattan Street, Carlton  HD
SHINE Mary  19 Grattan Street, Carlton  Saleswoman.

Appear to be the children of Stephen SHINE and Margaret CAREY.

Stephen died at Carlton in 1896.

Thanks for the other link Deb - I am a bit rusty here as I haven't been here for a long time.

Cando, Yes the signature of Margaret SHINE is different to the other writing. I meant that she didn't write the other writing under her signature.

Margaret only gave her address as Carlton and I have presumed that the Margaret you found on the electoral roll is the correct one. She married a few years after James DANSEY was born.
The witnesses are hard to read but it looks like Dr Th.........d, Mrs Cliffe and Not Any.

The other births above this one have an address where born as 6 William Place South Yarra - it could be a coincidence but I thought it worth noting.

Thank you for taking an interest. Cheers Ted

It was required the the informant give either their relationship to the child being registered or their occupation.  How did Margaret SHINE describe herself?

Thank you...but no way of knowing whether it was the mother or daughter who signed as informant named on the birth certificate.

She married a few years after James DANSEY was born.

The Margaret SHINE who married in 1897 was born 1876 Portland....different family.

Margaret DANSEY SHINE dau of Stephen SHINE and Margaret CAREY was born 1865 Taradale.

The one I found married Thomas MURDOCH in 1905 in Newcastle NSW, but then seemed to live their married life back in Melbourne.

I have been wondering if Isabella ROBINSON and Margaret  SHINE knew each other somehow. Maybe they went to school together., or were family friends. Margaret was 4 years older than Isabella.
