Early Doungworth(e)'s of Bradfield/Sheffield
« on: Tuesday 26 April 16 22:39 BST (UK) »
i have in my family tree a Thomas Doungworthe, lived in Bradfield, metropolitan borough of Sheffield, metropolitan county of South Yorkshire, region of Yorkshire and the Humber. i have notes saying he lived about 1515 - 1591, married an Elizabeth. children were Elizabeth, Thurstan, John, Thomas, Nicholas & Giles. looking for information that can take me back past Thomas & shed some light on what kind of church he belonged to. thinking catholic or anglican. have seen name variants such as Doungeworthe, Doungworthe, Doungworth, Dungworth, Dangworth. he had children baptized in Rotherham, grandchildren christened at  Sheffield Cathedral/St Peters Church. have seen mention of the following Doungworthe's:

1313 William born in Storrs, England
1338 Richard, an Ecclesfield parish
juror
1378 John, living in Handsworth
1442 John, & wife Beatrice, moved from Ughill & Dungworthe, & set up a corn mill by the river Dan/Don at Carbrook, halfway between Sheffield & Rotherham, had a son John living in 1461, who had a son John in 1552 that left money to a daughter Alice to mend Carbrough Lane.

hope im related to one or all of the above Doungworthe's. any help appreciated.

Hi

The registers for Bradfield are on line here for the dates 1559-1727

There are quite a few Doungworthes in it

Hi

Not sure if  Catholic registers are online for this area, I have had a quick look but not seeing anything. When I've been researching this area, this link has helped me out, but they are Anglican records. I will check the Non Conformist registers for you.

or maybe try registering here and asking someone with local knowledge of the area for advice

Hello

I suggest you try the Sheffield Indexers site (just Google it). Elaine Pickard, a major player/transcriber on the site has a lot of Dungworth in her tree. Ecclesfield, Bradfield and SSPeter and Paul (now Sheffield Cathedral) were all Anglican.
