I wonder if Winifred registered 2nd quarter 1861 Sheffield is the same child but registered late.

Nothing surprises me with genealogy.

I wonder why they changed the children's birth places, it all seems so odd to me.

I suspect that wherever they are they are together as a family because I can't find any of them at the moment.

I can see Thomas in 1881.
Do you have John in Oldham in later censuses. How have you made the family connection?

I was actually tracing John's family for a friend and she sent for his marriage certificate and it gave his father's name Martin, a labourer. I looked for Martin and he was the only one with a son called John born in the correct year.

I can't see them either after poking around with various options on several sites. There seems to be only 1 piece missing from the 1881 as far as I can see. The problem may be that a page has not been imaged & therefore not transcribed. There have been threads on here about issues like that, but how you find out which pages I do not know.

I am not so surprised about birth place changes, sometimes the enumerator did too many dittos when copying the householder's sheet  ;D

Do you know where Helen was living when she died? Do you know of any marriages of children between 1871 & 1881 - this might give an address?

Just noticed your post - where was John living when he married?

He was living in Oldham, Lancashire and he died there in 1909. I have only found Thomas's marriage to Emma so there's Mary and Catherine's marriage's to find.

I'm not sure where Helen/Ellen died it just says Durham however for Martin's burial it says St Cuthbert's, Durham and another record gave his burial at Redhills Cemetery.

There are quite a few McDermotts in Oldham!

If you had the address from his marriage it might help.
Did he marry Elizabeth Elwood?
