yet another ... what do the census say about W Steven's place of birth?
I want to find Bearley to help me narrow down the census search - Stevens is a rather common name!

Yes it is.
No luck narrowing him down in 1871 with wife Elizabeth (b East Dereham and/or Norfolk), presumably with a child or two? Your research must have led you to W and Elizabeth Stevens via their children. Have you not found the children in 1871?
What years of birth do you have for W and Elizabeth?
Added: There are not many Elizabeth Stevens b Norfolk with husband W in the 1871 census. I only had a quick look though ....
Do you know if Elizabeth was born in East Dereham?
Elizabeth will be from either Norwich (if she's a later model) or Ipswich (if earlier). As I said, I'm not 100% sure which "Elizabeth daughter of George" she is.
I actually didn't work back from children in this instance.
I've been doing lots of successful research in the BNA, since my ancestors are (in the main) farmers (and millers) of the middling sort, and they were wealthy and/or snobbish enough to get their BMD's printed in the papers.
Whilst doing these searches I became aware (to the point of annoyance) with a George Womack of Norwich, who was a VERY successful, large scale tailor (booking big display ads) in the 1850's. So I though I'd see where he fitted into my tree. (His son, another George, was killed in the Thorpe rail disaster, and his wife sued the railway for loss of his large presumed income, by the by)
It turns out he doesn't, in the sense that any connection is at least pre-1700.
Ho Hum.
This Elizabeth Womack/William Stevens marriage turned up during the research, and it's now an itch I'm desperate to scratch!
