Where (on earth) is Bearley?
« on: Wednesday 04 May 16 14:52 BST (UK) »
I have a wedding between a W Stevens Esq, of Bearley, Devon, and Elizabeth Womack (an ancestor).

http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=746808.msg5940933#msg5940933

From the Marriage Cert, both William Stevens, and his father Thomas Stevens give an occupation of "Gentleman".

The marriage notice was posted in

Exeter and Plymouth Gazette - Friday 15 May 1863
Cambridge Independent Press - Saturday 16 May 1863
Western Times - Friday 08 May 1863
Norfolk News - Saturday 09 May 1863
The Ipswich Journal - Saturday 09 May 1863
Norfolk Chronicle - Saturday 09 May 1863
Bell's Weekly Messenger - Saturday 09 May 1863
Bury and Norwich Post - Tuesday 12 May 1863

But I simply cannot find Bearley, on maps either old or new (except what I believe to be a "false hit" near Yeovil, Somerset, which has a Bearley Stream, lane, Lakes &c) Can anyone help?

There is a train service between Bearley  and Cranbrook (Devon).    So it looks like there is a railroad station called Bearley currently.

Did the notice in all newspapers give the place name as Bearley? As they married elsewhere perhaps the place name was misheard by whoever "wrote up" the notice and that was copied by other papers.
I can't see a place name on Genuki that it may have been mistaken for.

Have you found W Stevens in any census to see where he says he was born? In the newspaper announcement is "Bearley" his place of birth or his place of abode?.

There is - its the one in Warwickshire. Bugbear is looking for a place of that name in Devon.

I have tried to use the BNA as a "period" glossary, and restricted the search to county:Devon to filter out most of the Warwickshire hits.

That doesn't leave much. There's a quite interesting sale notice:

North Devon Journal - Thursday 20 September 1900

It sounds as if "Bearley's" might be a farm (or large house?) not a town or village.

Possibly just fields, not a farm or estate.  :(
