1881 Census
« on: Wednesday 20 July 05 18:48 BST (UK) »
Hi there

Does anyone know whether the 1881 census that can be found on
familysearch.org can be found as an image of the enumerator's
page, the same as the 1901 and all the other ones?

The reason being is that I am trying to confirm the birth year
of an ancestor for example:

On the 1861 they are 16, on the 1871 they are 26,
on the 1881 they are 43 ??? and on the
1891 they are 50, even more ???

I have been hunting through birth indexes today for an
1840-1847 birth but just cannot find anything :(

Help please.
Ewan

Hi Ewan
Yes the images for the 1881 census are on ancestry.com if you subscribe.
Is there anyone in particular I can find for you?

Hello Anne, wow that was quick I was just gonna have some dinner.

If you could help me please the details are as follows:

William H Cox aged 43
Helen J Cox aged 33 (I have since found out this is Ellen Fanny Cox)
Maude N Cox aged 3
Lionel H Cox aged 1

28 Whimple Street  Plymouth Devon
The public records office reference is -
RG11
2201/38
17

I am hoping that William Henry Cox's age will be nearer 36, but
I am not holding my breath.

Helen J Cox (Ellen Fanny Cox) her age has remained consistent
throughout.

Thanks again
Ewan

Hi Ewan
I've just had a look at the image and the handwriting is perfect and absolutely legible, there is no doubt the age is written as 43

Cheers

I have found ages on the census not to be very accurate which can sometimes take you of the right trail but the worst is the 1891 census

Thanks Jim

Know exactly what you mean, as I have said to people
before half the time I am sure my ancestors didn't know
how old they were or where they were born.

As in the cas of this particular ancestor of mine from Birmingham of
whom I am trying to find a birth certificate for, when he was
living at home with mum and dad - 1861, 1871 his age
was consistent, but when he was living with his wife and
family all sense of "how old am I" must have went out the
window (did they have windows then :-\
